4 Ways To Keep Your Kitchen Sponge Clean

One of the most important tools in our kitchen is the handy sponge that sits near your sink. Sponges are the best tool when it comes to cleaning up spills, wiping down counters and even cleaning your dishes! But what about the sponge itself?  It needs to be sanitized and cleaned on a regular basis to keep bacteria from growing and to keep smells away. So how do you sanitize a sponge you might ask? Well check out the suggestions below on how to keep your kitchen sponge clean:

  1. Place the sponge on the top rack of dishwasher. Let it run through one cycle and it will remove harmful bacteria and dirt. A good trick is to have one sponge in the dishwasher and one on the sink. Then when one sponge needs to be cleaned you will have a back up ready to go!
  2. Soak your sponges in one part water to one part bleach. Leave this mixture overnight and when you wake up your sponge will be clean.
  3. Microwave your used sponge for 30 seconds. The heat will zap the bacteria and keep your sponge clean. Also, try microwaving a soapy sponge for 1 minute and wiping down the inside of your microwave, it will leave it shining and clean!
  4. Throw your sponges in the washing machine with a load of dish towels and cloths to get it bacteria free and sanitized.
