7 Tips For Carving Pumpkins!

The Halloween and fall season is officially upon us and it’s time to start breaking out decorations and carving pumpkins! Pumpkin carving is a great family fun activity, that gets everyone into the spirit and let’s your creative ideas run wild. So where do you start? Well, you can start by reading our 7 tips below for making your pumpkin carving experience the best possible:

  1. Prep Work: Make sure you prep the area you are carving in by laying down newspaper or cardboard to make for an easier clean up. Despite our best efforts, pumpkin carving can be a messy experience.
  2. Draft: Start by drafting your design on to the pumpkin using a water based marker. This way you can plan your design and erase any mistakes before you make the first cut.
  3. Right Tools: Using a serrated knife tool is the best for pumpkin carvings. If possible, grab a few kits they sell in stores for pumpkin carvings. They come with all the tools needed and make the process much easier.
  4. Templates: If the idea of freehand carving doesn’t do anything for you, consider doing some research. Online, you can find a ton of  free pumpkin carving stencils and templates. It will give you a guide to work off of and will make for really creative pumpkins! Check out my post with 750+ Pumpkin Carving Stencils!
  5. Slow & Steady: One of the most important carving tips you can take away, is to carve slowly and gently. If you go to fast you’ll end up with jagged lines and poor result. Take your time and enjoy the process of creating your masterpiece pumpkin!
  6. Long Lasting:  If you want to have your pumpkin last for a longer amount of time, give it a cold water bath after it’s carved. Place it design down in a tub of cold water and let it soak for at least an hour.
  7. Lighting: When you are ready to light your pumpkin you have a few options: You can light it by candlelight, you can use a light bulb (7 watt is suggested) and an electrical source or you can go the extra safe route and use battery operated candles. No matter what, make sure you choose a safe, open place where your pumpkins can shine!

3 Ways To Clean Bath Toys

Bath toys are a great way to make bath time a lot of fun! Not only will it make the kids happy to have a few fun water toys, it usually makes bath time much easier to get through. But what happens when the kids are clean and the bath toys have been played with and put aside? It may not be what you think about right away, but bath toys are an important item that need to be cleaned on a  regular basis. Cleaning bath toys regularly will not only help them last longer, it will remove any germs that might get stuck within the,. Check out the list below for 3 ways to clean bath toys:

  1. Bleach: If you are looking for a way to kill germs and keep bath toys looking great try using bleach. Use a teaspoon of bleach in a sinkful of water and let the toys soak. This will help remove any germs or residue that might be hanging on. Once they have soaked,  rinse well and squeeze out any water that may be inside of them. Dry thoroughly before putting away.
  2. Dishwasher: If you have some bath toys that need a clean, try using the dishwasher. Before popping them in, make sure they can withstand the washing cycle and won’t melt. After they have gone through, squeeze out any water and dry in the sun or by hand.
  3. Vinegar: Vinegar is a great, safe alternative for cleaning bath toys. Similar to the bleach method, pour a small amount of vinegar into a tub of warm water. Using a toothbrush, give the toys a good scrub in the vinegar/water mixture and let soak. Once they have soaked, dry well by hand or outside in the sun!

Happy…almost Halloween all! We are about to start carving pumpkins and I wanted to post a VERY AWESOME tip for those of you that may be carving (or just recently did). There is sort of a magic trick to help preserve those awesome pumpkins you just spent forever doing.

Pumpkins need moisture and they also need something to help slow down the growth of mold. Here is what you can do…. Mix 1 teaspoon bleach with 1 gallon of water (you may need a few gallons and a few teaspoons to cover your pumpkins). Then, let your carved pumpkins sit in it for about 4 hours (yikes, scary I know, but it really does work).

Then you can also cover the carved areas and interior of pumpkin with petroleum jelly (or vaseline) which will help it stay moist. Enjoy and have fun!

How To Make Glow In The Dark Icing

As Halloween sneaks up around the corner, the pumpkins, decorations and haunted houses start popping up everywhere! So to get in the spirit, why not add some Halloween fun into your baking. With a few simple kitchen cupboard ingredients, you can create your very own glow in the dark cupcake icing. Not only will it add a special twist to your Halloween dessert, the glow off the frosting will surprise guests of all ages! Check out the instructions below to create your very own glow in the dark icing:

Ingredients Needed:

  • 1 Cup Of Butter
  • 4-5 Cups Of Icing Sugar
  • 1 Cup And 4-5 Tablespoons Of Tonic Water
  • 1.5 Tablespoon Of Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Box Of Coloured Jello
  • 1 Cup Of Boiling Water

Instructions:

  1. Start by creating your basic frosting. Beat the butter until smooth, add powdered sugar and tonic water alternating as you add it. Add vanilla and beat till smooth.
  2. Ice your cupcakes however you prefer and pop them in the freezer. They should be in there long enough for the icing to harden.
  3. Next, boil 1 cup of water and add Jello. Stir until combined, about 2-3 minutes. Add 1 cup of tonic water, mix and remove from heat. Place the mixture into a second bowl and keep that bowl on ice to make the Jello as cool as possible. Once the Jello is cool to the touch but not firm, give it a quick stir and remove it from the ice.
  4. Once removed, it’s time to dip the cupcakes. Remove them from the freezer, dip one at a time and replace them back in the freezer once they have been dipped. The more you repeat this process, the more they will glow! Serve once the glow has dried and display them under a black light for an even better glow!

Ways to Save on Produce (5 Tips!)

Simple Ways to Save on Produce

Produce is one of the hardest things to save money on. It rarely goes on sale for a decent deal and prices seem to just keep climbing. Below you will find some easy ways to save money on your produce bill this year without even having to try very hard!

  1. Shop the loss leaders. Say what?! The front page of a store grocery ad is called a loss leader. These are items that, many times the store looses money on because they are so inexpensive but they do it to get people in the door. Take advantage of these sales, especially when it comes to meat and produce!

  2. Shop local. Now that it’s summer, most local farmer’s markets are open for the season. Make sure you take time to check yours out this week; you might be able to grab some great deals! If you don’t want to pay what the farmer is asking, many prices are negotiable. You can also wait until the end of the day to go shopping. During that time, many farmers are ready to head home and they don’t want to have to take their produce home so they will sell it to you at a discount. Another way to save shopping this way is to buy in bulk; the farmer will often give you a bigger discount.

  3. Buy from coops or in bulk. Produce purchased in bulk often is the best price per pound. You can get bulk produce occasionally from health food stores or special bulk buying promotions in your area. Sometimes grocery stores have bulk produce deals too, you just have to ask! Not sure what to do with those 10 pounds of cherries you just purchased? Freeze or dehydrate them for later!

  4. Buy in season. Of course you aren’t going to get a deal on peaches if you need to have them in December, peaches are in season at the very end of summer and only for a short while! Produce will be much less expensive when purchased in its correct growing season. For more info on growing seasons, simply Google for a “seasonal produce chart” or see the one I like below:

season5. Buy frozen. If all else fails and you are unable to get a great deal on fresh produce, look at your other options. Frozen fruits and veggies are picked at the height of their season and flash frozen to be the freshest tasting they can possibly be.

As you can see there are so many ways to save money on produce! Also if you keep a careful eye out you may even be able to spot some coupons for produce here and there to save even more.

What are your favorite ways to save on produce?

How To Easily Clean Paintbrushes

Whether you are painting walls in the house or a canvas in the sun room, your paintbrushes are doing a lot of work. Because brushes are such an important part of painting, we should really take care of them right? Well, it’s easy to forget to properly clean them after a painting session and most times they will dry out and become close to unusable because of it. Well, luckily there is an easy fix for this problem and the secret ingredients can be found in your own home! Check out the instructions below to learn how to clean paintbrushes easily:

Items Needed:

  • Paintbrushes
  • Vinegar
  • Soap
  • Warm Water

Instructions:

  1. Start by warming up a small bowl of vinegar (enough to coat the bristles) in the microwave. Heat 20 seconds at a time until hot.
  2. Pour vinegar into a jar or bowl and add any and all dirty paintbrushes. Make sure the bristles are covered by the vinegar. Let them soak for at least 20 minutes or longer if the paint is really stuck.
  3. Once the brushes have soaked and the paint is starting to rub off, rinse with warm water. Follow up by re washing all brushes with warm soapy water, working your fingers through the bristles to remove any stuck on paint. Rinse one more time to remove soap and lay out flat to dry.
  4. Brushes should be good as new and this process can be repeated as necessary.

10 Things You Shouldn’t Refrigerate

Did you know that some food and perishable items actually do better outside of the fridge? It may come as a surprise, but some of the things your used to tucking away in the fridge shouldn’t really be there at all. It can cause those items to perish faster and it can cause you to lose valuable produce which can affect your grocery shop and budget! So how do you avoid this exactly? Well, check out the list before for 10 things you shouldn’t refrigerate:

  1. Potatoes: Potatoes are meant to live in a dry place, preferably in a paper bag. If potatoes are kept in the fridge they will lose flavor and eventually start to mold at a faster rate.
  2. Avocados: Avocados can be a tricky item as the ripen at a fast rate. To make them last longer, keep them out of the fridge until ripe. Once ripe they can be stored for up to 4 days in the fridge.
  3. Coffee: Some think keeping coffee in the fridge will keep it fresher for longer. However, if it’s kept in the fridge it will actually start to condensate and lose flavor.
  4. Honey: Honey and the fridge do not make a good pair. Once refrigerated honey will start to harden and become unusable after a few weeks. It’s best to keep it at room temperature always.
  5. Melons: If you want to get the most out of your melons, don’t keep them in the fridge! If you keep them at room temperature, the flavor will actually start to get better.
  6. Bananas: While it’s wise to leave bananas on the counter until ripe, they can be put into the fridge once they have reached desired ripeness to help them last longer.
  7. Garlic: Minced garlic will work great in the fridge, but if you are storing a full head keep it out of the cold! Garlic heads will thrive much better at room temperature.
  8. Stone Fruit: Basically anything like apricots, plums or nectarines should be kept on the counter until ripe. This will help them seal in the flavor and stay fresh. Once ripe feel free to store in the fridge.
  9. Tomatoes: Surprisingly, tomatoes are another fruit that make the do not cool list! Refrigeration will cause the tomatoes texture to change. Store them at room temperature on the counter for the best quality.
  10. Canned Parmesan: Lastly,  canned parmesan doesn’t need to be refrigerated, most times it can be kept in a cool cupboard.

How To Remove Sharpie From Almost Anywhere

We have all been through it, using a Sharpie and it slips out of our hands only to land on the desk or the floor leaving a nice black mark in it’s wake.  Luckily, there is a super easy way to remove sharpie from hard surfaces and it doesn’t take too much time!

Next time you have a mishap with your Sharpie, grab some nail polish remover or acetone. Using a paper towel or cloth, rub the remover into your sharpie mark. You should notice it starting  to lift right away without any vigorous scrubbing. Before you know your sharpie marks will be a thing of the past! Now keep in mind this will work on most surfaces, but it is not suggested for fabrics or upholstery.

Household cleaners and bathroom scrubs can be expensive….that’s why I love this next tip!

Did you know…

You can cut a grapefruit in half and add salt to your tub, sink, toilet then use the grapefruit to scrub. The juices in the fruit will help break up dirt and grime and the salt will help scrub through all of it!

Also, Grapefruit contains 88-95% limonene and  studies show that limonene protects against pancreatic, stomach, colon, skin, and liver cancers. So you may want to add grapefruit to your diet as well!

I had a BLAST today watching the kiddos play in our homemade glow in the dark bath paint!

This recipe is super easy and way too much fun! It’s SO good for the kids to play with because it really gets their sense going. Miley (my almost 1 year old) played forever in it. She was splashing around, painting, laughing and just enjoying her fun bath. Although it looks super messy (that’s part of the fun right?!) it’s actually extremely easy to clean since you are using shaving cream. This stuff just rinses right away so go ahead, let them make the biggest mess ever.  😉

*See me recipe on how to make GLOWING WATER – this makes the bath even funner and is SO easy!

You will need:

1 – Fluorescent Tempera Paint (you can get these online on Amazon) or from a local craft store. I really like this one because it is non-toxic.

paint

2 – A blacklight (or you can use glow in the dark paint if you don’t want to buy a blacklight but the tempera paint is a little brighter). They have these on Amazon, I have this one but you can get smaller ones at Walmart too which are a little cheaper.

3 – Shaving Cream – I totally use the kind from Dollar Tree! It’s just $1 and lasts a long time!

4 – Glowing Water (optional but super easy) – see the recipe here.

How To Make It:

Fill a container or bowl with a good amount of shaving cream (I’d say about 1-2 cups) and add about 1 teaspoon Fluorescent Tempera Paint. You will then need to mix it BUT I use a paint brush to do this and I tap it and stir lightly because I’ve found if you use a spoon it will make the shaving cream get kind of runny.

I like to put the mixture in a muffin tin (from Dollar Tree) or in plastic bowls (these are nice because they float in the water).

Let the kids make a huge mess and have tons of fun. When you are done, simply rinse the shaving cream off and voila, it’s clean!

I spent some time…actually a lot of time at Dollar Tree and scoped out the “Good” and “Bad” buys. I also asked for YOUR opinions on the Raining Hot Coupons Facebook page and so many of you gave me some great tips on items you love and items you don’t really care for from Dollar Tree. Thank you all for your tips. Below you will learn what to spend your money on at Dollar Tree (this may apply to other dollar stores as well since they all kinda carry the same stuff). Enjoy…Also, I would love to read any other tips you have in the comments!  🙂

I am going to break it down into categories and different sections of the store.

Household Cleaning:

cleaning 1

cleaning 4

Things to Buy:

  • ANY of the L.A.’s Totally Awesome products – I had a TON of readers says that they are like magic. The spot remover works awesome and the oxygen power cleaner works as good as the other expensive brands. I recently purchased the Orange cleaners from them and it really is wonderful and quite awesome.  😉
  • Fabric softener – believe it or not, this stuff smells great, comes in a big bottle for a buck and is perfect for refreshing couches, rugs, and even pets!
  • The Works cleaner – I have not tried this but a lot of readers swear by it. I can’t wait to try it!
  • Palmolive Dish soap – there are often coupons available for these so you will get a great deal.
  • Sun detergent or dishwashing soap – again, these often have coupons so keep an eye out and if a coupon pops up, you will score a nice deal.

cleaning 2 cleaning off brand

Pass on these:

  • Brooms – the handles often break on these
  • Garbage bags – a TON of readers had negative things to say about the garbage bags, the rip and tear easily.

Health & Beauty:

  • 3 pack loofah sponges (these are perfect for kid’s baths)
  • Hair bows, ties, bobby pins, headbands
  • Shaving Cream – this stuff really does work and smells pretty good! I love it for just $1!
  • Close-Up mouthwash – this is the only brand I would recommend (the others are not so great)
  • Triple Antibiotic ointment
  • Hydrocortisone Cream
  • Scotties tissue – these will often have coupons so you will get great deals
  • Cotton pads
  • Name Brand make-up – I have spotted Elf and Maybelline and once again Maybelline always has coupons!

Pass on these:

  • Q-tips (this isn’t the brand but pass on them) they bend and are not strong and the cotton on the end is very fuzzy
  • Off Brand Lotions
  • Perfume and Cologne

Birthday Items:

BIRTHDAY 2 BIRTHDAY 1

birthday 3

Things to buy:

  • Wrapping paper – I am shocked at how much wrapping paper has gone up in price so the $1 store paper is a great deal and you can get a few different designs!
  • Gift Bags
  • Cards
  • Candles
  • Streamers (these come with 2 so they are only $0.50 each!)
  • Cups
  • Birthday decor (party hats, balloons, invitations, favor bags, etc)
  • Mylar balloons
  • Tissue paper

Pass on these:

  • Plastic utensils (they break easily although I do recommend the table liners which is in the same section)

Food and Candy:

Things to buy:

  • Movie candy – stop by on the way to the movies and pick up the boxes of candy for just $1! You may be able to find these at Walmart for $0.97 but if you’re closer to a Dollar Store then you may want to stop there instead!
  • Candy for Pinatas and Party favor bags – they have several bags of candy that have individually wrapped pieces so this is perfect for Birthday parties! For example, ring pops, suckers, avengers candy pieces and more.
  • Popsicles – These have $1/1 coupons which makes them FREE!!
  • Soda Pop – I love these, they are off brand but they are huge and perfect for Birthday parties. In my opinion they taste like Shasta.
  • Popsicle Molds – a pack of 6 for just $1 – that’s awesome!
  • Hormel Pepperoni – Once again, there are often coupon for $0.50 to $1 off which makes them only $0.50 or FREE!
  • Drink mixes – these are fabulous, just add 1 to a water bottle and it flavors your drink…they even have sugar free.
  • Seasonings – can’t go wrong for $1!

Pass on these:

  • Check expiration dates on all the food items…sometimes they tend to have things that go past that date.  😐

Kitchen and Bath:

Things to buy:

  • Tupperware
  • Tubs and Bins for organizing
  • Glass Vases
  • Foil baking tins (perfect for Thanksgiving and way cheaper than other stores)
  • 3 pack kid’s toothbrushes – there are often coupons that make the kid’s toothbrushes free and sometimes the come with travel cases and covers
  • Bathroom Decor – for just $1, that’s a steal!
  • Shower curtain – I have heard of people painting these and coloring them for the kiddos bathroom!
  • Shower curtain hanging rings (not sure what they are called exactly but they hold up the curtain and are normally very pricey)
  • Kid’s bubble bath – this stuff works great and lasts a long time!
  • Hefty plastic bags – normally coupons for them which makes them a great deal
  • Napkins – they come with a ton and work great
  • Tupperware – can’t go wrong with these packs
  • Mason Jars – you can do recipes in these, cookies jars, gifts, crafts and more!
  • Plates, Cups, Mugs, bowls – this is great if you need to just get a few or want some variation in colors
  • Kitchen Towels and Mits – look how cute these are in the picture above..I love the green and purple and for just $1!

Pass on these:

  • Pie Tins (these are not good for baking because they tend to rust) ALTHOUGH, they are good for kids crafts and play.
  • Candles – they don’t smell that good and even if they do in the store, the scent doesn’t last once lit in my opinion
  • Coffee Mugs – I have heard from several readers that these leak and the lids don’t stay on
  • Toilet Paper – this is usually very thing and doesn’t work all that well.  😳

Art and Supplies:

ART PINS SAY NO SCHOOL

Things to buy:

  • Large Activity Coloring books – these are very big and the kids will have a blast with them (some even have stickers)
  • Teacher corner – there are great tools here for not only teachers but homeschoolers, preschoolers or just if you want to teach some fun stuff to your kids. They also have sticker books which would be great for chores!  😉
  • Sewing kits with bags – $1…enough said!
  • Pom poms, felt, foam board, craft supplies
  • Safety pins – I hear these run out often so if you see them, snatch them up!
  • Vinyl Decals for decorating and for kid’s rooms – these are SUPER cute and can totally change the look of room or bathroom for just $1…I say yes!
  • Poster board

Pass on these:

  •  Glue sticks – they tend to be dried out or dry out fast after opened
  • Frames – these usually break when you are trying to even just put the photo in… see what I mean?
  • Garage sale signs – I say no because you can easily look across the aisle and find the BRIGHT colored poster board priced at $0.69 then cut them in half and you’ve got 2 signs so just about $0.35 each instead of $1.
  • Crayons – they don’t work… weird huh? No really, the color is super dull.
  • Playdough – this stuff is usually dried out….if you find one that’s not, you’re lucky!
  • School supplies – you can usually always get better deals from places like Staples, Office Max etc as long as you buy at the right time…starting in about July and August they offer $0.01 deals, freebies and more. Just watch Raining Hot Coupons and I post them all Summer long.

Miscellaneous:

PASS 2 PASS YES 2 YES

Things to buy:

  • 3 pack socks that makes each pair about $0.33 each!
  • Disposal bags for when walking pets – you get a ton for super cheap
  • Big bottle of Bubbles – lots of Summer fun with these!
  • Flip Flops – now I can’t say these are going to last but I’ve found that most $1 flip flops anywhere you get them don’t last long. They are great for public pools, the beach, etc so you don’t have to worry about someone taking them.
  • Puzzles – great for the kids or even party favors or Birthday party game gifts
  • Pack of Littles Toys – I LOVE to use the packs of insects, glowing stars, dinosaurs, erasers, etc for Pinatas! They work out perfect because you get quite a few for just $1.

Pass on these:

  • Toy Cars – these tend to be very cheap and break (the plastic is flimsy)
  • Outdoor lights – this may seem like a great deal but they don’t last long at all
  • Lighters – don’t really work long
  • Goggles – the water seeps through  😐
  • Batteries – don’t last
  • Anything electronic – according to many readers opinions and my own, anything electronic never last long.

Hope that helps….do you have anything to add to the list?! I would love to hear….

Coupon 101 For Coupon Newbies!

Learn How to Use Coupons!

I’ve had this posted in the “Coupon 101” tab in green up top but I’m not sure how many of you have seen it. It’s just some information on Coupons for “coupon newbies”. So enjoy….

Welcome! If you are new to using coupons then you’ve come to the right place! Here I am going to give you some tips and teach you what I know about using coupons and saving lots of money doing so! After reading through my guide, I suggest heading on over to the FAQ section!

First of all, what is “couponing”?

A lot of people don’t understand how you can take a $0.50 off coupon and save so much money, get things for free, or even make money! It’s possible, I do it all the time, and you can do it too. Here is the basic concept that has to be applied when using coupons: Only use a coupon when paired up with a sale! Here’s an example of what this means:

If you have a coupon for $0.50 off Libby’s Green beans and you take that to the store and pick up a can that is priced normally at $1.00, then you are going to pay $0.50 and therefore you will have only saved $0.50. NOW, lets say that you wait until you see those green beans go on sale for $0.50 (and they most likely will) then after your $0.50 coupon, you will get these for FREE! Also, if your stores double coupons, you will have just made $0.50 to go towards the rest of your order! So really, that’s the secret to using coupons. I help make this easier for you by providing you with free lists of sales matched with coupons and post any good deals I find at stores with coupons.

You will find that you won’t have to pay for many different necessities again! Such as, toothpaste, razors (even the nice ones), toothbrushes, deodorants, soaps and more! I remember when I first heard this and thought to myself “say what”?! Yes, this is very true and the stores you will be getting them for free from are Rite Aid, Walgreen’s, & CVS!

Where do I get my coupons you ask?

Well, there are MANY different places to get coupons…

· Sunday Newspaper – These are the mega coupon papers! You will want to get one (or more) every Sunday. They will have coupon inserts in them including Red Plum (RP), Smart Source (SS), Proctor & Gamble (P&G). Occasionally you will get bonus inserts including, General Mills (GM), Target and more.

· Printable Coupons (from the Internet) – My favorite sites to print coupons from are Coupons.com, Red Plum, Smart Source, and Target (yes, they have coupons)!

· MagazinesAll You Magazine is a great one to get. You can find these at Walmart or you can get a subscription here. It is full of manufacturer coupons. Also, the Parents magazine is a great one that has good coupons for parents such as, Gymboree, Amazon diapers and more.

· Products you purchase – Keep in mind that on a lot of boxes of items you buy, there are coupons! For example, my box of Tide Laundry Detergent had $4 in coupons in the inside cardboard.

· Tear Pad or Blinkie – these are found in the Grocery stores and have coupons on them that you can take.

· Peelie – Coupon sticker found on the outside of a product.

· Catalina – These will print on the back of your receipt or with your receipt and usually for an item similar to something you purchased.

· Coupon Trains – Consider circulating and trading coupons via mail with family & friends.

Tips before hitting up the stores!

· Start out slowly and don’t plan on getting in on every single deal or it will all feel overwhelming! When I first started, I would find a good deal and go out and get it but I found I was doing this way too often and really just using a lot of gas. Understand that you don’t need to get every deal.

· Be organized! I shop one day a week and the night before my shopping day, I get my lists ready and coupons together. I choose Sunday because you will see that on Saturday I post the coupon matched lists and Sunday is when the new ads start (for drugstores where you will find a ton of great deals).

· Figure out a way that best suites you to organize your coupons. This is so important because if your coupons are not organized, you are going to get stressed out when you can’t find certain coupons and using coupons to save money is going to take a lot more time.

· Print out Store Coupon Policies, (which you can do here) and I highly recommend this in case you have a problem with a cashier honoring your coupons. If you have your store policy with you, you can just pull it out and it will make things a lot easier for you. Not saying you will have problems, but sometimes there are cashiers out there that feel like they are doing something wrong when you are getting items for free or close to it.

· Get your store’s weekly ad circular. You can also view it online or it will come in the mail so that way you can match the items on sale with your coupons.

· Only purchase the items on your list!! Doing this alone will always save you money….unless of course you find a freebie!

· Here’s an important one…Sometimes a smaller sized item is a better deal! Some coupons don’t have a size restriction (these are my favorite) so therefore you may be able to get that item in the travel section for FREE and if you have several coupons, you can stock up!

· Brand Loyalty is a no-no! Be willing to try out new products that you have coupons for. I use to never do this before using coupons and now that I do, I have actually found a lot of things I really like that I normally wouldn’t have tried.

· Overage = AWESOME! Understand what overage is and that it can dramatically lower your grocery bill. Lets say a product is on sale for $1 and you have a coupon for $2/1 for that item. After using your coupon, you will get $1 in overage, which will then be applied to the balance of your order! Do you see how that can really lower your balance…it’s like getting paid to shop! Note: Some stores don’t allow for overage.

There are a lot of times when I will refer to something as 11/28 RP, and you new coupon users out there will say “huh?!”. So I’ve compiled a list of different abbreviations often referred to in the coupon world. If you can think of anything else you’d like me to add to the list, please let me know!

  • ECB– Extra Care Buck (CVS store credit voucher that will print when specific items are purchased)

10 Tips To Sleep Better

Sleep is something we could all get a little more of, but that’s not always a possibility. So, the next best thing is to try to improve the sleep we are already getting. This can be achieved with certain bedtime routines, little tricks that will help us fall asleep faster and a healthier lifestyle. Check out the 10 tips below to start sleeping better:

  1.  Electronic Limit: Limit yourself to no electronics an hour before bed. The blue light that is given off, can actually keep you awake longer and leave you feeling restless.
  2. Avoid Clocks: There is nothing worse than staring at the ticking clock when you can’t sleep. It will bring on worry and stress, so make sure to turn away all clocks before bed.
  3. Relax: One important factor in a good night’s sleep is making the bedroom a place for relaxation. Try and keep electronics, work or anything else that might stress you out, away from the bedroom.

  4. Meditate: Meditating may seem overwhelming to begin with, but it can be really helpful to your health and sleep. Find a quiet time before bed for reflection and deep breathing, this will help your body ease into sleep.
  5. Find A Routine: Finding yourself in a bedtime routine isn’t the worst idea, in fact it can be really helpful. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday, this will set your body clock for success!
  6. Avoid Sugar: A really important tip for sleeping better is avoiding sugar and caffeine before bed. Not only will you find yourself wide awake, you’ll have trouble falling asleep at a decent time nights in a row.
  7. Tea: Tea is a great way to improve your sleep. Make sure to choose a herbal (No caffeine) tea such as chamomile or sleepy time tea. If you’re not a fan of tea, warm milk works great!
  8. Reduce Noise: An hour or two before bed turn down the lights, play soft music and put work aside. By doing these small tasks, you’ll be setting the tone for a good sleep.
  9. No Smoking: Did you know the habit of smoking is not only bad for your health, it’s bad for your sleep as well! So if you smoke, try to cut back for the sake of your sleep.
  10. Bath Time: One of the biggest ways to induce sleep is a bath or a shower. The more relaxing you can make it the better, so bring out the candles, heat up the bath and get cozy for great results.

My kiddos love taking baths but when you add glowing water to it, you can’t get them out! I love to make their bath water glow (you can even use this glowing water for parties and much more).

This recipe is super duper easy and so much fun for them.

Be sure to check out the recipe here for Homemade glowing bath paint!

1

You will need:

1 – Fluorescent Tempera Paint (you can get these online on Amazon) or from a local craft store. I really like this one because it is non-toxic.

paint

2 – A blacklight (or you can use glow in the dark paint if you don’t want to buy a blacklight but the tempera paint is a little brighter). They have these on Amazon, I have this one but you can get smaller ones at Walmart too which are a little cheaper.

3 – Water

Here’s how to make it:

For bath water you can just add about 1/2 a cup of Fluorescent Tempera Paint to the warm/hot running water. I then used a wire whisk to stir it all together. That’s it!

For the glowing water in bowls, just add about 1 tablespoon paint to 4 cups of water (you can adjust this by adding more or less paint/water to make it brighter).

Homemade Glowing Water - this is SO COOL and SO easy to make!

5 Uses For Coffee Grounds

Most people love a good cup of coffee during the day. But what happens when the coffee pot is empty and all your left with is coffee grounds? The first thought is to throw them away, but they have more uses then you might think. Not only are they a helpful ingredient for cleaning, they also have a few uses around the house. Check out the 5 uses below and you might just reconsider throwing away those grounds after your last cup of joe!

  1. Scour: Coffee grounds are one of the best items to use for cleaning pots and pans. Add some grounds to any dishware or pots/pans and use them to scour away stuck on food and residue. The grounds will help lift any pieces that are stubborn  and with a quick rinse you’ll be left with sparkling results.
  2. Sidewalk Salt: Believe it or not old coffee grounds make the perfect replacement for sidewalk salt. If the pathways around your homes are icy, simply spread some coffee grounds on the areas to melt the ice! This is not only a great way to save some money, it’s also much better for the environment!

  5. Scratch Repair: This might be the best use yet for coffee grounds. If you have any wood furniture that is scratched try this:  Put old coffee grounds in a bowl and use a small brush or q tip to paint over the scratches. The more you paint the darker the repair colour will be, so make sure to test this before doing the whole surface.

4 Ways To Reuse K Cup Coffee Containers

Many people have made the switch from a traditional coffee maker to a pod coffee maker such as the Keurig K Cup machine. K cup machines have become more and more popular in the last couple of years due to their ease of use and convenience. However, once the coffee is done we are left with those little empty coffee pods. Before you go to throw them away, why not reuse them? Surprisingly they have a few fun uses that is great for the whole family. Check out the 4 ways below to reuse K Cup coffee containers:

  1. Seedling Containers: K Cup’s make the perfect starter for any new seedling. Simply, plant your seed into the K Cup with a small amount of fresh soil.  Let the seedling grow in the cup until it’s ready to be moved to a larger container. To get extra creative, have the kids draw on the K Cups to make them extra special for the seeds.
  2. Paint Tool: If it’s art day around the house with the kids, try to use K Cup’s as a new painting tool. The open part at the top will make perfect paint stamped circles, while the bottom of the cup will give you full, colored in circles to play around with.
  3. Organizers: These mini empty cups couldn’t be any more perfect for organizing. Whether you are trying to organize the craft room or the workshop, these cups will keep the littlest of items all together in one place. If you are feeling extra creative, paint or cover the outside of each cup to personalize each one.
  4. Flavored Ice Cubes: Once you are done using these for coffee, clean them out with a cold water rinse and make ice cubes! You can make any kind of flavored ice cube you desire and they’ll be extra large to keep your drink extra cool. Add items like lemon, mint, juice or even chocolate milk and freeze. When your ready, pop a few in your favorite drink and enjoy!

Halloween Jar Lanterns Make Halloween Adorable

Halloween Jar Lanterns are an adorable and easy way to celebrate the holiday even if you can’t go out and buy your own jack-o-lantern.  With a few common materials, you’ll have these little lanterns ready to delight party guests or trick-or-treaters.  All it takes is a little imagination and a lot of fun to make fantastic Halloween Jar Lanterns.  It’s a great craft for everyone, from kids to adults.

Ideas for Halloween Jar Lanterns

You can make all kinds of favorite characters with Halloween Jar Lanterns.  Ghosts, witches, pumpkins, and mummies are just a few.  Use different colors of tissue paper, which is easily found inexpensively at dollar and party stores.  I used green for an adorable witch, orange and green for pumpkins, and white for a ghostie.  Look for jars that are all different shapes for a variety of characters in Halloween Jar Lanterns.  I happen to have a round Ball jar, as well as some straight sided ones, but you don’t need to use Ball jars for Halloween Jar Lanterns.  Save jars throughout the year for a great variety to choose from.  I love to save pickle and jelly jars for crafting all kinds of things.  Plus, if you need to store some leftovers, they are a great storage container!

What  You Need for Halloween Jar Lanterns

Halloween Jar Lanterns Torn

Place the strips on the jar, overlapping edges.  Neatness really doesn’t matter.  Smooth out any air bubbles.

Once the whole jar is completely covered, tip upside down and allow to completely dry.

When dry, use the markers to decorate with faces.

Place candles inside and light.

Safety with Halloween Jar Lanterns

Be safe with your candles in Halloween Jar Lanterns.  Make sure the candle fits down in the bottom of your jar without tipping over.  Place a drop or two of wax in the bottom and place the votive on it while it’s still melted to keep the candle in place.  Or use tealights, battery operated tealights, or even glow sticks.  They will make Halloween Jar Lanterns glow brightly and festively.

4 Ways To Avoid Freezer Burn

Freezer burn can be a real pain when it comes to any type of food. You are trying to save money by freezing extra foods, but everytime you do it comes out with a layer of freezer ice and most times becomes inedible. This can be super frustrating as freezer burn can lead to wasted food and wasted money, so what is the solution? Well there are a few ways to avoid freezer burn and they are easier than you might think, check out the 4 ways below:

  1. Rotate & Date: One easy way to avoid freezer burn is to keep the freezer organized. Anything that goes into the freezer should have a date on it. This will allow you to rotate the older items to the front and use them first preventing the growth of freezer burn.
  2. Cool Food Only: It is really important to make sure all food heading into the freezer cools off and doesn’t go into the freezer warm. If the item goes in even slightly warm, freezer burn will almost always show up. So, to avoid this let meals and leftovers cool for at least an hour or two before packing and freezing them.
  3. No Air: Air is a big enemy when packaging foods for the freezer. If there is any leftover air in your freezer item, freezer burn is more likely to show up. To avoid this you can make sure your bags are full to the top with no room for air or make sure all the air is squished out before freezing.
  4. Packaging: Packaging can be a really important factor when it comes to preventing freezer burn. You want to make sure all your items are wrapped tightly (even double wrapped) to keep our all the air and cold. Also, if you want to go the extra mile a food vacuum sealer works great to guarantee freezer burn stays out!

If your hair is already dry to begin with, excessive brushing can make it fall out at a faster rate! Make sure to be gentle when brushing hair and let hair dry before brushing through the strands. If you are brushing your hair while wet, try to use a wide tooth comb instead.
  4. Blow Drying: If you blow dry your hair on a regular basis, try this trick to avoid drying out your hair in the process! Blow dry on a low heat or a cool heat as the hot heat can damage hair easily and cause the strands to fray. Also, make sure to gently brush out hair when using heat to avoid damage.
  5.  Hair Breaks: It is important to remember to give your hair a break. Much like our skin, our hair needs a break from treatment and styling. Try to give your hair at least a one day break in between styling and salon treatments to avoid breakage and damage to your hair and scalp.
