3 Ways To Save Money With Gardening

Gardening season is in full bloom as we finish off spring and welcome summer with open arms.  Gardening is not only a great hobby but it can also be a great way to save money on your weekly grocery bill. This is because we can grow important grocery staples right in our own backyard. Check out the list below for 3 ways to save money while gardening:

  1. Herbs: Store bought pre-packed herbs can be really expensive in store.  You can pay up to $4 a package and most times these herbs won’t last longer than a couple of weeks. So this is why if you grow them in your home garden, you can save some serious cash! You can grow anything from basil to cilantro to even mint leaves. This will save you money in the long run and you can cut exactly the amount you need.
  2. Vegetables:  Another great way to save money is to grow your own vegetables right in your backyard! It doesn’t take too much knowledge or expertise to grow the most common veggies and you’ll get to eat something you have grown yourself! The options are endless but if you are just starting out try growing items like: tomatoes, green onions and even lettuce if you want something a little more advance.
  3. Fruit: Last but not least, fruit is a great item to have in your home garden. Having fruit in the garden is a great way to save some extra dollars at the grocery store and if you are extra frugal try growing items that can be frozen and saved.  Berries are one of the best fruits to grow as they don’t take up too much space, they can be eaten right away or frozen  and you’ll know exactly what is going in and on your fruit during the growing process. Make sure to try one of these options this gardening season!

I spent some time…actually a lot of time at Dollar Tree and scoped out the “Good” and “Bad” buys. I also asked for YOUR opinions on the Raining Hot Coupons Facebook page and so many of you gave me some great tips on items you love and items you don’t really care for from Dollar Tree. Thank you all for your tips. Below you will learn what to spend your money on at Dollar Tree (this may apply to other dollar stores as well since they all kinda carry the same stuff). Enjoy…Also, I would love to read any other tips you have in the comments!  🙂

I am going to break it down into categories and different sections of the store.

Household Cleaning:

cleaning 1

cleaning 4

Things to Buy:

  • ANY of the L.A.’s Totally Awesome products – I had a TON of readers says that they are like magic. The spot remover works awesome and the oxygen power cleaner works as good as the other expensive brands. I recently purchased the Orange cleaners from them and it really is wonderful and quite awesome.  😉
  • Fabric softener – believe it or not, this stuff smells great, comes in a big bottle for a buck and is perfect for refreshing couches, rugs, and even pets!
  • The Works cleaner – I have not tried this but a lot of readers swear by it. I can’t wait to try it!
  • Palmolive Dish soap – there are often coupons available for these so you will get a great deal.
  • Sun detergent or dishwashing soap – again, these often have coupons so keep an eye out and if a coupon pops up, you will score a nice deal.

cleaning 2 cleaning off brand

Pass on these:

  • Brooms – the handles often break on these
  • Garbage bags – a TON of readers had negative things to say about the garbage bags, the rip and tear easily.

Health & Beauty:

HEALTH

HEALTH 2 HEALTH 3

health nos

Things to buy:

  • Pregnancy Tests – these work really well and have always worked for me as well as all the readers who also recommended them!
  • 3 pack loofah sponges (these are perfect for kid’s baths)
  • Hair bows, ties, bobby pins, headbands
  • Shaving Cream – this stuff really does work and smells pretty good! I love it for just $1!
  • Close-Up mouthwash – this is the only brand I would recommend (the others are not so great)
  • Triple Antibiotic ointment
  • Hydrocortisone Cream
  • Scotties tissue – these will often have coupons so you will get great deals
  • Cotton pads
  • Name Brand make-up – I have spotted Elf and Maybelline and once again Maybelline always has coupons!

Pass on these:

  • Q-tips (this isn’t the brand but pass on them) they bend and are not strong and the cotton on the end is very fuzzy
  • Off Brand Lotions
  • Perfume and Cologne

Birthday Items:

BIRTHDAY 2 BIRTHDAY 1

birthday 3

Things to buy:

  • Wrapping paper – I am shocked at how much wrapping paper has gone up in price so the $1 store paper is a great deal and you can get a few different designs!
  • Gift Bags
  • Cards
  • Candles
  • Streamers (these come with 2 so they are only $0.50 each!)
  • Cups
  • Birthday decor (party hats, balloons, invitations, favor bags, etc)
  • Mylar balloons
  • Tissue paper

Pass on these:

  • Plastic utensils (they break easily although I do recommend the table liners which is in the same section)

Food and Candy:

FOOD CANDY

drink

seasoning

Things to buy:

  • Movie candy – stop by on the way to the movies and pick up the boxes of candy for just $1! You may be able to find these at Walmart for $0.97 but if you’re closer to a Dollar Store then you may want to stop there instead!
  • Candy for Pinatas and Party favor bags – they have several bags of candy that have individually wrapped pieces so this is perfect for Birthday parties! For example, ring pops, suckers, avengers candy pieces and more.
  • Popsicles – These have $1/1 coupons which makes them FREE!!
  • Soda Pop – I love these, they are off brand but they are huge and perfect for Birthday parties. In my opinion they taste like Shasta.
  • Popsicle Molds – a pack of 6 for just $1 – that’s awesome!
  • Hormel Pepperoni – Once again, there are often coupon for $0.50 to $1 off which makes them only $0.50 or FREE!
  • Drink mixes – these are fabulous, just add 1 to a water bottle and it flavors your drink…they even have sugar free.
  • Seasonings – can’t go wrong for $1!

Pass on these:

  • Check expiration dates on all the food items…sometimes they tend to have things that go past that date.  😐

Kitchen and Bath:

BATH 2 BATH KITCHEN 2 KITCHEN NOS KITCHEN

Things to buy:

  • Tupperware
  • Tubs and Bins for organizing
  • Glass Vases
  • Foil baking tins (perfect for Thanksgiving and way cheaper than other stores)
  • 3 pack kid’s toothbrushes – there are often coupons that make the kid’s toothbrushes free and sometimes the come with travel cases and covers
  • Bathroom Decor – for just $1, that’s a steal!
  • Shower curtain – I have heard of people painting these and coloring them for the kiddos bathroom!
  • Shower curtain hanging rings (not sure what they are called exactly but they hold up the curtain and are normally very pricey)
  • Kid’s bubble bath – this stuff works great and lasts a long time!
  • Hefty plastic bags – normally coupons for them which makes them a great deal
  • Napkins – they come with a ton and work great
  • Tupperware – can’t go wrong with these packs
  • Mason Jars – you can do recipes in these, cookies jars, gifts, crafts and more!
  • Plates, Cups, Mugs, bowls – this is great if you need to just get a few or want some variation in colors
  • Kitchen Towels and Mits – look how cute these are in the picture above..I love the green and purple and for just $1!

Pass on these:

  • Pie Tins (these are not good for baking because they tend to rust) ALTHOUGH, they are good for kids crafts and play.
  • Candles – they don’t smell that good and even if they do in the store, the scent doesn’t last once lit in my opinion
  • Coffee Mugs – I have heard from several readers that these leak and the lids don’t stay on
  • Toilet Paper – this is usually very thing and doesn’t work all that well.  😳

Art and Supplies:

ART PINS SAY NO SCHOOL

Things to buy:

  • Large Activity Coloring books – these are very big and the kids will have a blast with them (some even have stickers)
  • Teacher corner – there are great tools here for not only teachers but homeschoolers, preschoolers or just if you want to teach some fun stuff to your kids. They also have sticker books which would be great for chores!  😉
  • Sewing kits with bags – $1…enough said!
  • Pom poms, felt, foam board, craft supplies
  • Safety pins – I hear these run out often so if you see them, snatch them up!
  • Vinyl Decals for decorating and for kid’s rooms – these are SUPER cute and can totally change the look of room or bathroom for just $1…I say yes!
  • Poster board

Pass on these:

  •  Glue sticks – they tend to be dried out or dry out fast after opened
  • Frames – these usually break when you are trying to even just put the photo in… see what I mean?
  • Garage sale signs – I say no because you can easily look across the aisle and find the BRIGHT colored poster board priced at $0.69 then cut them in half and you’ve got 2 signs so just about $0.35 each instead of $1.
  • Crayons – they don’t work… weird huh? No really, the color is super dull.
  • Playdough – this stuff is usually dried out….if you find one that’s not, you’re lucky!
  • School supplies – you can usually always get better deals from places like Staples, Office Max etc as long as you buy at the right time…starting in about July and August they offer $0.01 deals, freebies and more. Just watch Raining Hot Coupons and I post them all Summer long.

Miscellaneous:

PASS 2 PASS YES 2 YES

Things to buy:

  • 3 pack socks that makes each pair about $0.33 each!
  • Disposal bags for when walking pets – you get a ton for super cheap
  • Big bottle of Bubbles – lots of Summer fun with these!
  • Flip Flops – now I can’t say these are going to last but I’ve found that most $1 flip flops anywhere you get them don’t last long. They are great for public pools, the beach, etc so you don’t have to worry about someone taking them.
  • Puzzles – great for the kids or even party favors or Birthday party game gifts
  • Pack of Littles Toys – I LOVE to use the packs of insects, glowing stars, dinosaurs, erasers, etc for Pinatas! They work out perfect because you get quite a few for just $1.

Pass on these:

  • Toy Cars – these tend to be very cheap and break (the plastic is flimsy)
  • Outdoor lights – this may seem like a great deal but they don’t last long at all
  • Lighters – don’t really work long
  • Goggles – the water seeps through  😐
  • Batteries – don’t last
  • Anything electronic – according to many readers opinions and my own, anything electronic never last long.

Hope that helps….do you have anything to add to the list?! I would love to hear….

4 Ways To Clean Jewelry At Home

Jewelry is a really important and special thing to most people. Whether it be a hand me down from a relative or a few pieces you picked up at your favorite store, you always want to make sure your jewelry is clean and well taken care of.  You can easily buy store bought cleaners and solutions to clean your jewelry, however there are a few ways you can do it yourself at home. Check out the 4 ways below and start cleaning your jewelry at home:

  1. Alka-Seltzer: Simply combine a glass of water with a Alka-Seltzer tablet and drop in your jewelry.  Let soak and rinse once dirt has surfaced. While this won’t deep clean your items, it will remove any surface marks, dirt or grime.
  2. Light Beer: Yes, it’s true beer really can clean jewelry! This method is for gold with no stones and any other jewelry you are looking to clean.  Simply, pour a small amount of light better on a non abrasive cloth and rub gently where dirt and grime is showing. Finish the process by drying with a soft cloth.
  3. Aluminum Foil: This method is best for silver items. Make a small bowl out of tinfoil and lay out  silver jewelry on tinfoil. Sprinkle baking soda over top of the items and then proceed to pour boiling water over the baking soda. Move the jewelry around slightly to release any dirt. Once finished, rinse with cold water.
  4. Toothpaste: Toothpaste is a perfect cleaner for anything that has diamonds on it or in it!  Grab an old toothbrush and toothpaste and scrub slightly around the diamonds and in between the crevices. Once you have scrubbed simply clean off the ring with a damp cloth.

How To “Unshrink” T-Shirts

There is nothing worse than pulling clothes out of the dryer, only to find that your favorite t-shirt or sweater has shrunk 3 times smaller than it was. Many clothes shrink naturally when they are washed and dried, but there are certain materials that shrink way smaller than wearable. Luckily, there is a solution to this problem. You can easily get your shirts back to size with a few materials and some drying time. Check out the instructions below to “Unshrink” your favorite T-shirts:

Materials Needed:

  • Warm Water
  • Baby/Gentle Hair Conditioner
  • Towel

Instructions:

  1. Start by filling up the sink or a bucket with warm water making sure it’s not too hot or cold.
  2. Add about 1 Tbsp of conditioner for every 1 liter of water.  Baby conditioner or shampoo will work the best.
  3. Soak the item in the mixture for 30 minutes making sure it is completely soaked.
  4. Wring the garment out but do not rinse. The product will work away at the shirt to stretch it out.
  5. Lay out your shirt on the towel and roll the shirt and towel together. Use the towel to squeeze out moisture and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  6. Using a second dry towel, lay out the shirt and start gently stretching the direction you want the shirt to go. Secure the stretched out garment with heavy objects and let dry.
  7. Once dry, your shirt should be stretched back to its original size.

How To Waterproof Canvas Shoes

Canvas shoes such as Tom’s or Bob’s are great for almost anytime of the year or activity. However, they don’t always hold up when it comes to fighting against rain or snow. The good news is there is a super easy way to keep your canvas shoes protected and it won’t break the bank! It may take a little elbow grease, but the process is well worth it as your shoes will be weatherproof!

The one product that makes this possible is beeswax!  The best way to apply the wax, is to rub it over the entire canvas area of the shoe. Once the canvas is looking nice and waxy, grab a hair dryer! Use the hair dryer to go over the wax, this will help the wax form into the shoe and produce a protective layer against rain and snow. Once you have dried the wax on to the canvas, you should see no beeswax residue on the shoe. Your canvas shoes are now ready for any kind of weather!

3 DIY No Slip Hangers

It can be really frustrating to get all your clothing hung up in the closet, only to have those items slipping off the hangers the next minute and landing on the floor.  So how do you solve this problem? You could go out and buy special hangers that not only cost a lot more than normal hangers or you could make your own! There are 3 different ways to make DIY no slip hangers, check them out below and make yours today!

Pipe Cleaners: Pipe cleaners can be added to hangers to make them non slip. Just wrap the pipe cleaner from the corner of the hanger and keep wrapping until you have done the whole thing. This will stop clothing from slipping off and is a very inexpensive way to solve the problem!

Elastic Bands: Simply wrap an elastic band around the end of each side of the hanger to make the clothes stay put.

Glue Gun: Draw a small line of glue on the top of each hanger and let dry and cool.  Make sure to make the line thick enough to keep clothes from falling off. The best part about this method is it is easily hidden from the outside looking in!

10 Uses for Orange Peels

Who knew there were so many ways to use orange peels?! This fruit peel works for cleaning, deodorizing, candles and more. Check out all the ideas below and be sure to leave a comment if you have any more ideas or uses for orange peels!

#1 – Citrus-Scented Bath Powder: After a long day at work, school, or maybe even the DMV (those lines can be the source of some brutal headaches), some of us like to march to the bathroom and run a nice hot bath to relax in. If you’re that type, this is for you, especially if you enjoy the fine smell of orange. If you let some orange peels sit on a counter and dry out, you can grind them down to a powder. You can use this powder like you would any store-bought bath powder and have a nice, “Florida orange” smelling bath, courtesy of your local supermarket.

#2 – Wood Polish: If you happen to have some fresh orange peels lying about (fresh and moist peels, preferably) you now have the proper equipment to give your old wood a nice, new shine. The oils inside the peels of oranges act as a fine polish for your wood dishes and utensils. Just give whatever piece of wood you’re working with a tough scrub with the peel and, in no time, you’ll have a great, deep new shine. For outside the kitchen, you can use this to give beat-up, dusty, wooden sofa legs a store-like finish as well.

#3 – Aromatic Candles: While you could go out to your local thrift store and buy a candle with a miniature painting of Elvis on the case, sometimes its easier and more enjoyable to do things at home. If you’ve got a few oranges lying around; when you’re peeling them, try to pull the stem out along with some of the shell (cutting the orange’s shell in half and pulling the stem out on one side works best with this. Once you got this all worked out, fill this bowl-like orange peel with some form of oil, making sure to get that stem well soaked in it. Light the oily stem as if it were a wick and you’ll have a nice, orange-scented candle keeping your home smelling great. If you have trouble keeping the stem lit, you can tie a piece of twin around the base of the stem and wrap it around the stem to help wick the oil up to burn.

#4 – Natural Medicine: If you just so happen to be a character in a B-grade horror flick, where your heart is constantly racing as you anticipate where the villain is going to come from, just take a page from the medicine men from the days of old. Many ancient pharmacists had concluded that oranges were an amazing natural medicine for many years, whether they were bitter or ripe. More importantly, orange peels have also been proven to decrease blood pressure through direct consumption. So, if you ever find yourself in a film directed by Sam Raimi, remember to bring a couple of orange peels along; it might just save you from a heart attack, brought upon by a camera flying through a cabin window.

#5 – Brown Sugar Preserver: We all hate it when we open up our bag of brown sugar, only to find it all clumped up and stuck together, especially when you’re in the middle of preparing a dish where time is of the essence. Thankfully, if you just finished going through that bag of Florida oranges, all those peels can help keep your brown sugar an actual sugar. Just keep some orange peels mixed in with it all in the bag, and the peels will absorb most of the moisture that gets in, keeping your sugar from solidifying and turning into that all too familiar bag of brown rocks.

#6 – Insect Repellent: While you could go out and buy all kinds of different insect repellents, this one for your skin; this one for the food you’re making on the grill; and this one for whatever reason, you could simply go out and buy some oranges. After you’re done enjoying your amazing citrus snack (definitely better for you than those potato chips), just use the orange peels to keep the pests away. Rub them on your skin instead of spraying some random mixture of chemicals you bought at the store, or just lay the peels around. In addition to just smelling really good, those peels will keep a variety of insects away; snails, mosquitos, and even those pesky ants that seem to be everywhere.

#7 – Make-Shift Sponge: If you have a relatively fresh orange peel, one that’s still relatively moist, you can make a nice, quick sponge of it. Just use the inside of your fresh peel to thoroughly scrub whatever surface it is you are cleaning up. It’s safe for use on many surfaces; metal, wood, countertops, floors, et cetera. As an added bonus, your fresh peel will leave a nice, citrusy scent on the surfaces you clean it with. Not only will your stovetop be cleaned, but it won’t smell like that burnt chicken breast from a few weeks ago anymore.

#8 – Fertilizer: If you’ve always wanted to start your own garden, but the soil at your home just doesn’t seem to be the greatest, nutrient-rich stuff you’ve ever worked with, you can always just get some oranges. Once you finish your healthy treat, you can compost those peels and make that dead-grass-covered patch of land into a fertile tract of soil that will let those rose bushes you’ve always wanted to plant grow to be green and strong.

#9 – Kindling: If you’re ever short on twigs, branches, or any other kind of small kindling that you need to start a family bonfire in the back yard, orange peels can help you out here as well. Just toss them into your fire and they’ll burn rather easily, especially if they’re fresher, as the oils in them will allow them to burn easier. Just remember to start fires responsibly; I don’t want the police knocking on the door because you told them that I told you to go out there and start fires.

#10 – Deodorizer: Of course, considering their usually powerful citrus scent, it wouldn’t be very shocking to see “deodorizer” on this list. Just set a few out and let them sit for a while, if your using them just to make an “okay smelling” room smell good. However, if you want to deal with bad odors, you’ll have to be a little more strategic; put them in the bottom of trash cans, put them down the trash disposal to deal with old, moldy food smells coming from there; and you’ll want to make a sort of dish from a peel and fill it with salt or baking soda if you want to de-stench your fridge.

Enjoy…Also, I would love to read any other tips you have in the comments!  🙂

I am going to break it down into categories and different sections of the store.

Household Cleaning:

Things to Buy:

  • ANY of the L.A.’s Totally Awesome products – I had a TON of readers says that they are like magic. The spot remover works awesome and the oxygen power cleaner works as good as the other expensive brands.

  • Scotties tissue – these will often have coupons so you will get great deals
  • Cotton pads
  • Name Brand make-up – I have spotted Elf and Maybelline and once again Maybelline always has coupons!

  • Off Brand Lotions
  • Perfume and Cologne

Birthday Items:

BIRTHDAY 2 BIRTHDAY 1

  • Wrapping paper – I am shocked at how much wrapping paper has gone up in price so the $1 store paper is a great deal and you can get a few different designs!
  • Gift Bags
  • Cards
  • Candles
  • Streamers (these come with 2 so they are only $0.50 each!)
  • Cups
  • Birthday decor (party hats, balloons, invitations, favor bags, etc)
  • Mylar balloons
  • Tissue paper

Pass on these:

  • Plastic utensils (they break easily although I do recommend the table liners which is in the same section)

10 Simple Ways To Have A Spa Day At Home

Sometimes going to the spa and getting pampered just isn’t in the budget. But that doesn’t mean pampering and luxury should fall to the wayside! You can replicate a relaxing spa visit right in the comfort of your own home! All it takes is a few simple things from around the house and your favorite relaxing products. Check out the list of 10 simple ways to have a spa day at home:

  1. Music: Pick your favorite relaxing playlist and hook it up to some speakers in your bathroom.
  2. Bath: Set up your bath exactly the way you like. Add bath balms, rose petals, oils or just plain old bubbles. Make sure the water is nice and hot and if you have it add a water pillow to rest on.
  3. Lights: Dim the lights and put on some candles. Even better if you have some aromatherapy candles lying around.
  4. DIY Treatments: The internet holds lists after list of homemade DIY masks, scrubs and body wraps. Pamper yourself with a few treatments you would usually get at the spa!
  5. Eyes: Place cucumbers on your eyes while you are soaking in the tub or enjoying a mask. Not only are they refreshing for your eyes, they come loaded with skin benefits.
  6. Towels: There is nothing better than a cozy, fluffy towel. Throw your favorite towel in the dryer for 10 minutes, by the time your finished it will be nice and warm.
  7. Unplug:  One big thing to leave behind for your spa day is your electronics. If you can, unplug from your phone, tablet or any other device and just relax. Just like at the spa, you’ll have uninterrupted relaxing time.
  8. Robe: One of my favorite things at the spa is putting on a soft robe at the end of the treatments. Make sure to have one available and throw it on at the end to keep the relaxing vibe going.
  9. Drink: Sometimes all that pampering can get tiring and you’ll need a drink! Prepare lemon water or your favorite tea beforehand, to enjoy while you relax.
  10. Reading: If you love to read, make it part of your spa night. Either grab some of your favorite magazines or your newest book and settle in.

3 Ways To Keep Towels Soft

There is nothing better then getting out of a hot, steamy shower only to wrap yourself up in a super soft towel. However, towels don’t stay soft past the first couple uses and tend to become less absorbent. So how do you go about fixing this? Well, there are lots of suggestions on how to keep your towels and cloths soft, what sometimes it can be hard to tell what actually works. Luckily, we have listed below 3 ways on how to keep your towels soft and cozy and these methods actually work:

  1. Gather all towels that need to be washed/softened. When your washer has reached it’s rinse cycle, add 1/4 cup of vinegar to the washer. This will strip away any residue and leftover detergent. The best part is, vinegar will also fight against any odors that have embedded into your towels.
  2. Another way to keep towels soft on a regular basis is to wash towels in super hot water. Start by checking the tag to see what it suggests for temperatures.  Then set your washer to that temperature and wash as normal. This will make the towels very soft and will strip away any oil or greasiness left on the towels.
  3. The final suggestion on keeping your towels soft is to not use fabric softener.  When it comes to towels fabric softener tends to works against them and will reduce towel absorbency. So instead use the vinegar suggestion above to keep towels soft and skip the softening products all together!

10 Tips To Sleep Better

Sleep is something we could all get a little more of, but that’s not always a possibility. So, the next best thing is to try to improve the sleep we are already getting. This can be achieved with certain bedtime routines, little tricks that will help us fall asleep faster and a healthier lifestyle. Check out the 10 tips below to start sleeping better:

  1.  Electronic Limit: Limit yourself to no electronics an hour before bed. The blue light that is given off, can actually keep you awake longer and leave you feeling restless.
  2. Avoid Clocks: There is nothing worse than staring at the ticking clock when you can’t sleep. It will bring on worry and stress, so make sure to turn away all clocks before bed.
  3. Relax: One important factor in a good night’s sleep is making the bedroom a place for relaxation. Try and keep electronics, work or anything else that might stress you out, away from the bedroom.

  4. Meditate: Meditating may seem overwhelming to begin with, but it can be really helpful to your health and sleep. Find a quiet time before bed for reflection and deep breathing, this will help your body ease into sleep.
  5. Find A Routine: Finding yourself in a bedtime routine isn’t the worst idea, in fact it can be really helpful. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday, this will set your body clock for success!
  6. Avoid Sugar: A really important tip for sleeping better is avoiding sugar and caffeine before bed. Not only will you find yourself wide awake, you’ll have trouble falling asleep at a decent time nights in a row.
  7. Tea: Tea is a great way to improve your sleep. Make sure to choose a herbal (No caffeine) tea such as chamomile or sleepy time tea. If you’re not a fan of tea, warm milk works great!
  8. Reduce Noise: An hour or two before bed turn down the lights, play soft music and put work aside. By doing these small tasks, you’ll be setting the tone for a good sleep.
  9. No Smoking: Did you know the habit of smoking is not only bad for your health, it’s bad for your sleep as well! So if you smoke, try to cut back for the sake of your sleep.
  10. Bath Time: One of the biggest ways to induce sleep is a bath or a shower. The more relaxing you can make it the better, so bring out the candles, heat up the bath and get cozy for great results.

3 Methods To Clean Your Iron

An iron may be something you use on a regular basis or only once and awhile. Regardless, like everything else it needs to be cleaned and taken care of! There are a few methods for cleaning your iron quickly and easily and it doesn’t take long to do! The three methods below range from a quick clean, a more thorough clean and a good scrub down, depending on what your iron needs. Check out these 3 methods below and choose one to get your iron clean:

  1. Turn your iron on low heat and take a cloth to it. Give it a good wipe down while it is warm. This method will reduce residue and is good when you don’t have time for an in depth clean.
  2. Again, have the iron on low heat before cleaning. Then sprinkle salt (Kosher would work great here) on the iron and use plain paper to give it a thorough clean.  The salt will loosen dirt and residue left on the iron and will lift with the paper.
  3. For more of a serious clean, pick up a Magic clean eraser at your local grocery store. Use this to give the iron a full clean, front to back. Paying specific attention to the burnt on leftovers and any dirt. Make sure the iron is cold for this method and feel free to you a wet or dry magic eraser!

7 Other Uses For Your Hair Dryer

Hairdryers are great for the obvious, drying hair! But what else can it do? Maybe you use your dryer everyday or maybe your like me and only use it occasionally, regardless you don’t want it to just take up valuable cupboard space. So what can you do? Well, luckily you can use your hairdryer for other things! Check out this great and handy list below on how to use you hairdryer other than on your hair:

  1. Wrinkle Remover: Your hairdryer can act as quick, mini iron.  Lay clothes flat on the bed and blow the wrinkles out. If you have extra wrinkly clothing hang them in the bathroom while you shower to steam then and then use your dryer to blow out the rest of the wrinkles.
  2. Sock Warmer: On those cold winter nights, take your hairdryer to your socks. You can warm them up prior to putting them on for cozy feet!
  3. Paint Dryer: Tired of watching pair dry? Take a hairdryer to the area you are working on and hurry up the drying process.
  4. Wax Cleanup: Use your hairdryer to remove crayon marks or wax spills. Blow dry the stain until the wax starts to melt, then wipe off.
  5. Set Frosting:  A great way to set frosting on a cake or bakery item is to use a hairdryer. Cool air will harden the icing and warm air will make your glaze sparkle.
  6. Dusting: If you are short on time when dusting, use your hair dryer to remove a layer of dust and get in those tight corners.
  7. Label Help: The stubborn, sticky label not moving? Heat it up with a hairdryer to help remove it. It should slide right off with a little bit of heat.

3 Ways To Keep Your Fridge Organized

The fridge is something we access and use every single day. So it makes perfect sense to try to keep your fridge neat and organized. However, before you know it with all the different food types and containers in the fridge, things can get messy. So what is the best way to keep things together? Well, there are a few easy tips to keep in mind that will help you keep your fridge extra organized and hopefully cut down the amount of time you have to spend cleaning and moving things around. Check out the tips below for 3 ways to keep your fridge organized:

  1. Lazy Susan: It may seem silly to put a turntable lazy susan in your fridge, but surprising it can keep you really organized. By having a lazy susan in the fridge you will gain space and you’ll have easy access to important ingredients. The turntable idea works best with sauces, bottles, small containers and anything else that can be hard to reach or find in the fridge. All you have to do is spin it around to find exactly what you’re looking for. Also, it will keep food off your fridge shelves, making the fridge easier to clean on cleaning day.
  2. Baskets: Baskets can be really helpful in the fridge to keep items that are alike together. Try and find baskets that will be small enough to have a few in a row on your shelf and organized them according to your food. Grouping food items together will cut down the time it takes to find something and will make it easy to see and use up ingredients. If possible, go the extra step and label all your baskets.
  3. Cling Wrap: If you are looking for an easy way to cut down on fridge cleaning, try this fridge hack the next time you reorganize. Simply, place cling wrap or film on the shelves of your refrigerator and press to seal the sheets down. These sheets will catch crumbs and spills, while keeping your shelves looking brand new. When it’s time to clean, simply remove the cling wraps, clean the shelves and replace!

3 Homemade Spider Repellents

As summer comes to a close and fall/winter seasons start to creep in, spiders start to look for somewhere warm to hide. Unfortunately, in most cases that place is our homes. However, there is a way to repel them naturally, without using any chemical full and sometimes unsafe traps. If you are looking to keep spiders outside this winter, check out these 3 great methods below!

  1. Peppermint: Spiders hate peppermint, so use it to keep them away! Simply mix the following ingredients in a spray bottle: A  mixture of 1 part peppermint, 1 part water and a few drops of dish soap. Spray this around doors, windows and anywhere spiders like to hide in your house!
  2. Coconut: Coconut oil and vinegar are a perfect mix to keep spiders away! This mix is especially good if you find spiders in your shower: 1 part coconut oil and 1 part vinegar, mix together in a spray bottle. Use this method in your shower, bathrooms, windows and even around all your drains in the house.
  3. Citrus:  Last but not least, citrus is a great deterrent for spiders! This is the easiest method to keep them away as you can just drop a few essential oils anywhere around the house that they show up! Use oils such as: lime, orange, lemon to keep them away!

Pass on these:

  • Brooms – the handles often break on these
  • Garbage bags – a TON of readers had negative things to say about the garbage bags, the rip and tear easily.

Health & Beauty:
