I thought it would be fun to have a discussion today on “How to save money on pets”. My son is sitting here watching Scooby Doo, I have 3 Great Danes watching along and thought it may be a good time to talk about it.
I know it can be hard to switch up pet foods depending on the sale because that can be hard on an animals stomach. So we have to think outside the box and come up with other ideas. I want to hear your ideas as well but here are some of mine…
1 – Groom at home – Luckily pets don’t need grooming every day and cats don’t need much (other than maybe a nail trimming once a month or so). With this being said, you may want to come up with 2 days a month (or however often you feel necessary) and bathe your dog. I just use Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo, it’s gentle on their skin which is important for dogs. No need to purchase expensive products. You can also learn how to trim your pets nails at home instead of taking them to the groomer. *You will need to know some things before doing this so be sure to research it a little or read this article to help learn how to clip your animals nails safely. You can purchase nail trimmers here as well as Kwik Stop here (you will NEED to have this on hand) which will stop any bleeding.
2 -Score FREE pet items on Raining Hot Coupons (samples, treats, use coupons for deals, etc) – Keep an eye out because I am always posting about FREE cat and dog food samples, free treat samples and more. I also post a lot about how to get awesome discounts on pet items using coupons at stores like Target, Walmart and more!
3 – Believe it or not, you can get good deals on Pet toys, treats, food, etc from Amazon! Shop around on there because certain items will qualify for FREE shipping with Amazon Prime or when you spend $25 or more.
4 – Make sure to check the store your purchasing your pet food from because a lot of stores have a program where if you purchase so many bags of cat food, dog food, (sometimes even rat, bird, and fish food) you can get 1 FREE! At Petco, purchase 10 bags with your Petco rewards card (make sure to scan this) you will get a coupon in the mail for a completely FREE bag! Get this, it will be for the same size you’ve been purchasing – meaning possibly a large bag for FREE!
5 – For my favorite, last tip…this is a funky one but is such a money saver. ….well you know how dogs love stuffed animals, but they don’t seem to last very long?! These “dog toys” are not cheap but you want to know what I do? Head to a used clothing store, thrift shop, etc and go to the toy section. You can find tons of nice stuffed animals, pop them in the washing machine and voila! You just got a dog toy for $0.25! 😉
Now I want to hear your tips on how to save money on pets!
