Crock-Pot Chicken Tacos
Serves 3-4
Ingredients:
Corn tortillas – we are going to cook these, they turn out so much better this way!
1 or 2 packages of 1 oz Taco Seasoning packet
1 or 2 packages of 1 oz Ranch seasoning packet
6 frozen chicken breasts (I LOVE that you can use frozen chicken…it’s less expensive and so easy)
1 can of Chicken broth
1 can of Chicken or Turkey Gravy (I forget to picture this, sorry!)
Vegetable oil to cook tacos (not pictured)
Sour cream (optional – for tacos)
Directions:
- Place frozen chicken in crock pot – yes, I said FROZEN!
- Add Taco seasoning, Ranch seasoning, chicken broth, and gravy to crock pot of top chicken.

- Cook on high for 3-4 hours
- Shred Chicken with forks and place shredded chicken back in the crock-pot

- Let the chicken soak up the yummy juice in crock-pot for about 45 minutes.
Cooking the Tacos:
- Fill a shallow pan with Vegetable oil and let heat up
- Place corn tortillas in the pan and as soon as they start bubbling up, fold in half with tongs

- Cook for about 30 – 40 seconds until crispy (not too crispy) and lay on a plate with napkins to absorb oil
You can add sour cream, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, ranch and more to your tacos…I personally like them with sour cream and hubby liked them with BBQ sauce!
Enjoy!

Here’s an even easier and cheaper way: Put the frozen breasts in with a jar of salsa and let it cook all day. Comes out delicious!
I did these last weekend; used WalMart black bean and corn salsa and a can of black beans. They were GREAT!!!
sheri, so you just put the chicken and salsa in there and let it cooked all day. Do you cut up the chicken after it done?
thank you looks delicious an so easy deffinitly gonna try this : )
I personally love using chicken thighs in my crockpot. VERY inexpensive, and easy. There is basically just one flap of skin & fat to pull off (before or after cooking), and one bone that falls out while cooking. With this recipe, I would remove skin beforehand, or leave on and omit broth.
Oh good to know! Thanks Sara! I will definitely try that next time. =)
What gravy do you use? Chicken or Turkey and does this make it taste funny? I am weird about gravy
Hi Brittany, I used Turkey! I couldn’t taste it really but I think it add a little flavor. =) Everything tasted good so hopefully you like it.
These look amazing! My husband recently discovered he loves ranch, so this would be perfect! Im going to add this to our menu for this week coming!
PLEASE, NEVER EVER PUT FROZEN MEAT IN THE CROCKPOT TO COOK NO MATTER WHAT RECIPES SAY.
FOODBORN PATHOGENS MULTIPLY DURING THE FROZEN & RAW STATE TO COOKED AT THE LOW CROCKPOT TEMPS.
CHECK OUT FOOD SAFETY PER FDA.
Do you by chance have a link to that? I dont use a crockpot but i do bake frozen chicken in the oven and i havent ever died. Luck?
LOL, Stacy!
Yes, the USDA says not to cook frozen meat in a slow cooker before defrosting but it’s considered “safe” to do so in a hot oven of 350 or so.
That said, as long as everything is cooked to 165 on a thermometer, the chances of any bacteria surviving are very low. Bring it to a boil for minute or two and you all but guaranteed victory against the cooties. Take extra care with vulnerable populations like the very young, elderly and immune compromised.
That said, very few people worried about frozen chicken boobs don’t find their fingers dipping into raw cookie dough made with eggs or an over easy egg for that matter.
I have always used frozen chicken in the crock pot and no one in my family has ever become sick from cooking that way. Is there a link that you would recommend that references this info?
I’m actually in a food safety class at my school right now. The problem with it is, that your food stays at an unhealthy temp for too long (while the outside heats the inside is still frozen). It’s really no different than laying a frozen chicken on the counter for 4 hours. It tell more on most websites, just google food safety.
I would love to try this. It looks delicious. However… my son is a vegitarian and I am learning how to use the Morning Star chicken and crumbles. I don’t think I have it down so I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to turn this into a delicious vegitarian meal?
what I do (im a vegetarian and my boyfriend is a meat and potatoes kind of guy) is I would make that in the crockpot and then before that is done I will make morningstar crumbles on the stovetop. what you can do is add a bit of salsa, mexican seasonings and even some blackbeans so everyone can be happy. (Yes i know its a hassle but he hates meat substitutes >.<)
Or use Gardein (the greatest meat substiture for vegetarians) they have shreded bbq chicken and regular chicken that you can use instead!! seriously it tastes amazing! their beefless burgers imo are better than cow ones!
Some cookbooks suggest that frozen poultry thaws and is held at a dangerously low temperature when cooking in a Crock-Pot. Bacteria in raw chicken multiplies between 40 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. A cooking temperature of 160 degrees should be achieved to safely cook chicken. Slow cookers set to the “low” setting that cook at a minimum temperature of 160 degrees and 200 degrees on “high” will safely thaw and heat chicken for long-term cooking

Great recipe. I made this for dinner and everyone loved it.
Thank you for the suggestions.
Had this tonight and it was awesome! Thank you!
We loved it!! I made them tonight and used the frozen chicken. I also used the chicken gravy, Sarah did you use turkey cause that is what you had or do you like it better than chicken?
Hi Brittany! I actually did just use turkey because it’s what I had but honestly I am pretty sure either one would be perfect. =)
I have an easier version and it’s awesome. Chicken Breasts, a large jar of salsa, a packet or two or taco seasoning and some dried jalapenos. Throw it all together and cook.
Thank you so much. This sounds delicious and will be for dinner tomorrow night. 1 question… above you said 1 can of chicken broth but the picture shows 2 cans… lol.
OMG! This was so good and so easy… my husband said this was one of the best things he has ever tasted. Thanks so much for the receipe!!!
Really, TWO packets of Taco Seasoning and TWO of Ranch? Its not “too much” ? I love the sound of it all, but I would think one packet of each would be sufficient… I was just wondering… its not too salty or to overwhelming in taste with 2 of each packet? Thanks
You know, you could definitely do just 1 packet and it would be good and a little less salty. =)
I’m doing this right now! I chose to go a cheaper way and make the broth (throwing chicken buillion cubes in with water) and just used a gravy packet. I love chicken tacos and am hoping this turns out well!
Love this, makes for a cheap and easy dinner, thanks for sharing
Trying this tonight! I didn’t have gravy so I put in a can of cream of chicken soup. It looks and smells amazing . I hope it turns out as good as it looks.
Oh I bet that will taste just as good!!
Oh yes it was amazing with the deep fried taco shells . Making nanchos w the left overs tomorrow. Thanks for the amazing recipe.
Making this right now almost done can’t wait! Thanks love your recipes page.. I literally never used my crock pot till today love it!
Do you use 1 can of broth or 2, you put 2 cans in the picture but said to use 1 ???
Way to salty for me made it today and man way to much salt.
It may be the type of gravy and broth that you are using. Check the sodium content. That may help.
I made this last night and my husband and I were both overwhelmed with salt. I even used the low sodium chicken broth. I’m thinking maybe 2 packets of taco seasoning and 2 packets of ranch are way too much.
Yes you could definitely cut back to 1 packet of each so it will be less salty and I’m sure it would still be tasty. =)
Just put everything in the crockpot for this recipe. Can’t wait til its done! Looks like it makes a lot which is good since I have 3 growing boys and a hungry husband to feed!
This was delicious! But have to agree with the previous poster…it was a little too salty for my taste. I think that would be easily fixed by using the low-sodium version of the seasoning and broth.
Definitely a make again recipe!
Hi Sarah,
I wanted to let you know I tried this recipe and it was delicious thanks for sharing it.
This sounds so good. I make an easy taco recipe with frozen chicken breast, taco seasoning, Rotel or salsa. It is so easy & delicious!! I use flour tortillas, black or pinto beans, sour cream & cheese. Even my picky 8 year old will eat it!!
Is there a variation for pork? this sounds like it would make some epic carnitas
What size gravy did you use? It is the small jars??
I cook frozen meat on high in my crock all the tine.I also eat raw cookie dough : ) I am a rebel I guess. thanks for the yummy ideas!!!
Hi Sarah,
I just wanted to let you know that we tried this recipe and it was YUMMY!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing
This recipe looks so yummy…like yum yum yummy…lol
And seems so easy to make. my family looves tacos with chicken..I want to try this one…was wondering if you could sub the Ranch dressing for bottle dressing…might give that a try and let you know…Ty for yummy recipes =)
Do you think you could cook the chicken on low for 8 hours instead of on high for 3-4?
I do it on high for an hour or two and then change it to low…cook it for about six hours. Haven’t tried eight, but you could.
