How, in a crockpot, does this only cook for an hour? Do you cook it on high or low?

Can you cook it for an hour and then transport it and then finish it when you get to where your going? I have a potluck to go to and three hours in between leaving my house and getting there and trying to see if I can break the steps up without ruining the dish.

I added some ranch seasoning to give it a little extra kick of spices to it, and it was delish! πŸ™‚ I might try baking it after its all done with some bread crumbs on top or some crushed up fried onions. The possibilities are endless. πŸ™‚ Thanks for the great recipe!

I made this tonight. A few notes:
    1. It made a ton. My 3 quart crock pot was full to the brim. Somewhere in the comments it was stated that this makes 4-6 servings. I’d agree with this IF you are having mac and cheese as your main dish. For a side dish this makes at least 8-10 servings.
    2. Someone had asked about the sour cream flavor; from what I can tell the sour cream adds to the creamy texture but doesn’t give a strong sour flavor to the dish. It did seem like an overwhelming amount of sour cream when it was first mixed in with the cheese and cheese sauce, but it worked out okay in the end.
    3. It wasn’t tasting cheesey enough for me, so when I added the milk at the 1 hour mark I also added another 2 cups of shredded cheese. This helped a lot.
    4. As for crockpot size, I have a 3 quart pot and it was very full when I put the pasta, sour cream, cheese sauce and cheese in. I did manage to add another 2 cups of cheese and the milk at the hour mark and it all still fit for me. It’s a bit hard to stir in a 3 quart pot, but it’s not impossible.
    5. Overall, I thought it was a good, easy, and creamy mac and cheese. Especially if you have picky eaters that may not be into extra spices and flavors. But I do agree with the comment that something seemed to be missing. But since this is my first homemade mac and cheese I can’t venture a guess as to what that might be.

a little dry mustard powder is a great thing to add to cheese recipes. I make a mac & cheese very similar to this, and it just adds that something to the flavor. You can’t tell it’s mustard, but it tweaks the cheese flavor. πŸ™‚

I was really skeptical about this recipe because I am very picky about my macaroni and cheese. I normally make mine from a roux and use three kinds of cheeses. It’s a time consuming recipe which is why this recipe caught my eye. My family loved this, and it is a very acceptable replacement for my baked mac and cheese when I am short on time. I use skim milk and it comes out just fine. I add a little salt, pepper and cayenne- just a personal preference.

Yes, just saw the question about extended cooking time for multiplying the recipe. I want to cook this for 30-40 people …. so if I double/triple the recipe (and use several crockpots … of course I won’t be able to fit all these servings in one crockpot) what does it do to the cooking time? Anyone tried it?

first I only ever use fat free Greek yogurt in place of sour cream, and I use low fat milk as well. I will half the recipe and see how that works. BUT….. You say 2cups of shredded cheese but never say when and when to add it. Did I miss that. Planning on making it tonight.

    Thanks.

You can also make crock pot Mac and cheese like this. Put box macaroni in crock pot ( uncooked) 1 8 oz block cream cheese, 2 cups milk, 1 can evaporated milk, shredded cheddar cheese. Cook 2 hours on high. Stir. Add extra milk if needed. Cook 30 min longer. Turns out great. Very creamy.
