5 Different Uses For Dental Floss

When you think of using dental floss, your first though is most likely cleaning your teeth. While dental floss is meant for your teeth, it has a ton of other uses around the house. It can be used around the house and even in the kitchen! So if you have a few extra packs lying around, why not find a new use for them? Check out the list below for 5 different uses for dental floss.

  1. Cutting Tool: If you have a soft cheese or soft cake, try using dental floss when your ready to cut it. The floss is strong enough to cut through soft foods and it will leave you with a smooth straight cut that sometimes can’t be done with a knife.
  2. Clothesline: If you are ever in a bind and need a clothesline, use dental floss! Simply, tie the floss to two trees or posts and secure them in place. Once the string line is up, you can hang up your wet clothes to dry and the floss will hold! This would be a great idea for camping or adventuring this summer!
  3. Thread Replacement: If you are away on a trip and find yourself with a popped button, try this travel hack! Dental floss makes a great thread for fixing buttons and holes on the go. Use the floss as replacement thread whenever you’re in need to sew something. Be extra prepared and store a sewing needle in your floss for a DIY sewing kit.
  4. Decorative String: Dental floss makes a great tool for hanging decorations! It’s very strong so weight won’t be an issue and it’s clear so you won’t be able to see it.
  5. Faucet Fix: If you have a noisy faucet, try using dental floss for a quick fix! Simply, tie the dental floss so it is hanging down under the spout. The dental floss will allow the drip to run down it, which will decrease the noise of the drip on the sink.

follow me Back to School Guide: Tips for Saving Money on Supplies, Lunch Time, Schedules and More!

The end of summer marks the beginning of school and many kids are less than willing to give up the lazy mornings, hanging poolside and spending afternoons with friends. All of these things are hard to let go of and are compounded when you add in new teachers, homework and what seems like endless tests and quizzes. It’s easy to see why our kids might not be as excited about the first day as we are.

Saying goodbye to summer and hello to a new grade isn’t just hard on the students; Parents have a lot to do too! Buying school supplies and new clothes, coordinating schedules, making lunches and staying organized are all big players on mom and dad’s to-do list when school is in session.

So let’s get organized, save some time and money and help our kids get excited about going back to school. From school supplies to more structured schedules, let’s get ready to learn.

The Stuff (Supplies)

There’s no getting around the need for new supplies each school year and every school has a list for each grade level. Once you get your hands on the appropriate school supply list, skim it over and try to match up what your child needs with local sales. The stores all know your kid needs 50 notebooks and 100 hundred pencils, so they all jockey for a position on your radar with enticing sales and savings. Take advantage of those school supply sales and get as much of the generic items, like writing tools, paper, glue and notebooks as you can. It’s better to save on items that are “consumed” and splurge a little on items that should last all year, like backpacks, binders and lunchboxes.

See my Back to School coupon matchups and deals HERE!

Buying the back to school essentials is the prefect opportunity to include your child and help kick start a desire to get ready for school. Let your kids pick out some of the stuff they will need (like those non consumable items I mentioned before.) This gets them in the school mindset and gives them the opportunity to pick items that express their personality.

This is definitely a shop that will help you get organized AND stay stylish this year.

Clothing is the other unavoidable purchase you’ve got to make each year. Between growth spurts and season changes, parents are forever buying new clothes. Send your kids to school looking good while also knowing you saved some money in the process. Many retail stores also focus their sales on back to school clothing, so look around and find out who is offering the best deals. Look for percent off sales and cash back opportunities to stretch your clothing budget to the max.

Get Prepared

Ah, the 5 “G’s.” Get up, get dressed, get your breakfast, get your stuff and get out the door on time. That’s a lot for just a morning routine; Kids and parents have to cope with a stricter schedule come school time. There’s a lot opportunity for things to go wrong if you don’t properly prepare yourselves. Follow these tips to keep the morning machine running smoothly … And on time.

Try to prepare as much of tomorrow, today. Starting with what to wear, have your child pick outfits that they want to wear that week. Hang each outfit on a hanger and label with the what day of the week it is to be worn (they can choose this too!) This way, mornings won’t be a mad dash to find clothes and you can move on to the next morning task. You already bought the clothes on sale, make sure they get worn too!

lunch box Back to School Guide: Tips for Saving Money on Supplies, Lunch Time, Schedules and More!

Lunch time is biggie as well. If you don’t have to make lunches or whole lunches in them morning, you can spend more time on breakfast and getting the brood out the door in time for the bus. Start by planning a lunch menu to avoid standing in front of the pantry wondering what to send with the kids. After your lunches are planned, try pre packing snacks and sandwiches in advance (the night before or previous Sunday.) Even if you have to assemble the lunch in the morning, (cause who has 7 lunchboxes?) grabbing a prepackaged sandwich bag of pretzels, a ham sandwich and a juice box from the fridge takes all of one minute. Lunch: Done!

alarm Back to School Guide: Tips for Saving Money on Supplies, Lunch Time, Schedules and More!

Getting out of bed is sometimes difficult, especially if it’s not to play a game of baseball or go to the pool. If your child is heading off to school for the first time, help them get adjusted to a routine wake up time with a new alarm clock. Let them pick one out themselves, or check out this adorable Alarm clock on Amazon. It’s geared for younger kids by teaching them to recognize when to get out of bed and it doubles as a night light.

Bon Voyage!

Get your kids excited by sharing your own excitement and lead by example. On the last weekend before school starts, have a “back to school” party. Let them pick a special dinner and dessert and engage them in back to school activities.

Decorate all that new gear they got with name labels, stickers and iron on patches. This gives their belongings more personality and less chance of being accidentally mistaken for another child’s. Once you’ve got your decorating done, spend time together getting all the supplies ready and packed away in their new backpacks.

After the special meal and decorating session, get inquisitive with your kids and start a casual Q & A.
What do they look forward to about the new year? What do they want to learn about? Dust off your old school memories and tell them what it was like for you in school when you were their age. Sharing their excitement will lead to more enthusiasm.

Whether it’s saving money, decorating school supplies or talking about the future, make sure to include you child in as many aspects of the process as possible. Main keys to keeping them engaged (at least part of the time!) has got to be communication and attention. As summer slips away, hopefully it’s less noticeable and the information in this guide will make the transition easier for both you and your kids. Here’s to starting out the school year out on the right foot. Good luck!

  4. Human Art: Gather up the kids, washable paints and head outside. Instead of using a canvas for painting, let the kids paint on each other. Everyone can create a masterpiece and then when your ready to clean up, get everyone hosed down and start with a blank canvas!

4 Camping Hacks To Make Camping Easy!

Summer is officially upon us which can only mean one thing: camping! Camping is an adventure loved by many families and friends and in some places has become a yearly tradition. However, that doesn’t always mean camping is easy. You are usually up against bugs, weather and other outdoor elements that can really put a damper on things! Luckily, there are a few key hacks that will help you have the best camping trip! Check out the list below for 4 camping hacks to make camping easier:

  1. DIY Lantern: If you are short a lantern around the campsite, try this trick using a milk jug! Grab a milk jug and a head lamp (or light with a strap) and attach the lamp around the jug so it illuminates the inside. This will provide a good amount of light for the campsite and any late night walking adventures.
  2. Fire: If you are looking for a fast way to make fire, look no farther than the kitchen! Grab a small bag or handful of Doritos and place them in the center of your fire pit. These yummy chips make for great fire starter for any campfire!
  3. Pre Packed Pancakes: Preparing pancake mix ahead of time will save you mess and time when your ready to make breakfast. Before you leave home, make your pancake mix as normal and pour the batter into a large Ziploc bag. Making sure it has a tight seal, freeze the bag of pancake mix. Once you are ready to leave for camping, throw the frozen mix in the cooler to keep drinks cold and when it defrosts cut the corner of the bag and you’ll have ready to pour pancakes.
  4. Comfort: If you are looking for a little extra comfort on your camping trip, try this easy hack. Bring along a few inter-lockable soft play mat tiles or yoga mats and lay them on the floor of your tent. This makes for a much more comfortable camping experience and will keep some extra heat in the tent.

6 Ways To Use Aluminum Foil

Aluminum foil may be something you use everyday in the kitchen or while cooking. It is a handy tool that can make clean up fast and keep pans and cookware in good condition. So you might be thinking, what else could I use foil for? Well, surprisingly enough aluminum foil has a ton of uses around the house, inside and out! Check out the list below for 6 new ways to use aluminum foil:

  1. Pie Protector:  Save your pie crusts from burning with this simple trick! Wrap a strip of foil around the crust of your pie before baking in the oven. The crust will still cook nicely, but will not burn.
  2. DIY Pan: If you are in a pinch for a shaped pan, aluminum foil might just save the day. You can create almost any shaped pan in any design you like from foil. Use a pre-existing baking pan to hold your DIY pan and shape the foil into your desired design. Once foil is in a firm design, pour batter and bake as directed!
  3. Scrubbing Help: A ball of tin foil can go along way when it comes to tough messes. If you have stuck on food on your favorite pan, try using foil rolled in a ball to clean up your cookware.
  4. Soap Saver: If you find your soap falls apart when it’s left in the shower, try this trick! Place a small piece of folded foil underneath your bar of soap. This will keep the soap from sticking to your shower and it will help it last longer.
  5. Sharpen Scissors: An easy and fast way to sharpen scissors is to use foil! Simply, cut 5-8 pieces of tinfoil with dull scissors. After you have cut through the foil a few times, the scissor blades should be good as new!
  6. Dryer Ball: For a quick and easy homemade dryer ball, try using aluminum foil. Just grab a few pieces and roll them into a ball. Throw them in with your drying for a static free experience!

3 Ways To Save Money On Books

Reading is a hobby most people really enjoy year round. However, the cost of magazines and books can really put you over budget if your not careful with your purchases. Luckily, there are some easy ways to save money on books and reading material and it won’t take too much extra effort. Check out the 3 ways below to save money on books:

  1. Library: The library should be the first place you go if your an avid reader and looking to save some money. It’s completely free to have a library card and you will have unlimited access to a ton of books and magazines. Libraries will update there shelves regularly, so make sure to check in often. If you enjoy e-reading, most libraries will have the option to borrow e-books rather then buying them on there website!
  2. Book Swap: This option is my favorite for giving and receiving new or old books as it includes a social aspect as well. Gather up all your friends who love to read or have a collection of books at home and host a book swap. Everyone brings a certain amount of books with there own recommendation on how it read and then the swap begins! Trade and exchange books until you have the number you arrived with, this way everyone gets something new to read and it makes for a fun night!
  3. Bargain Shop: Books don’t stay at full price very often. Almost always, newer releases will go on sale within a month of it’s release date. So wait for the next sale or coupon code before you invest in that new book. Also, if your anxious to get a brand new book but don’t want to pay in store prices try purchasing the eBook version. Not only will it be cheaper, it won’t take up as much room as a hardcover book might!

Homemade Pesto Sauce

Are you a pasta lover? One of the most popular pasta sauces (besides tomato) is pesto! It’s smooth, rich and tastes so good on any pasta or vegetable dish. The only slight problem with purchasing pesto sauce is the price! A small jar can cost up to $8 dollars in store and it doesn’t usually go as far as you would think. However, there is an easy, healthier option which is to make it at home! It will take a few fresh ingredients, but you’ll be amazed at how good homemade pesto can taste. Check out the recipe below for instructions on how to make homemade pesto:

Ingredients Needed:

  • 1 1/2 Cups Of Fresh Basil
  • 1/2 Cup Of Parmesan Cheese
  • 1/3 Cup Of Olive Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Of Water
  • Dash Of Salt
  • Jar Or Container

Instructions:

  1. Start by blending the cheese and basil leaves together in a food processor or blender.  Just enough to start mixing the ingredients.
  2. Then add the rest of the ingredients into the mixture and blend until smooth. This may take a little bit of time as it takes time for the leaves to break down.
  3. Store pesto sauce in a jar or container in the fridge. It can also be frozen! To freeze: Pour the pesto sauce into an ice cube tray and freeze till solid. Once solid, pop the cubes out and store in a Ziploc bag. These cubes can be used frozen or thawed!

Whether you bake homemade dog biscuits to ensure your pet is eating healthful ingredients, to save money, or just because it’s fun, there is no question that your canine friend will be appreciative, and will benefit from the extra love baked into each treat.

This recipe is just a general guideline. Feel free to improvise by adding ingredients (bacon, peanut butter, cheese, flaxseed) or by substituting (bacon grease for oil, pumpkin for applesauce, chicken for beef) as you please.

The recipe makes approximately 60 average sized biscuits. They store well in an airtight container, but if that is too many for your use, you can freeze part of the dough for later. Or you can treat the pets of family and friends to fresh, wholesome biscuits too!

4 Ways To Remove Wrinkles Without Using The Iron

There is nothing worse than putting on your favorite article of clothing, only to find it’s completely wrinkled! But there is a few easier ways to remove wrinkles without even touching the iron! Check out the list below for 4 ways to remove wrinkles without using the iron:

  1. Dryer: The dryer is the number one tool to get wrinkles out fast. Simply grab your wrinkled garment and throw it in the dryer on medium heat. For extra wrinkle release power, throw in a small lightly damp cloth with the article of clothing.
  2. DIY Wrinkle Release Spray: Whether you choose to buy or DIY wrinkle release spray, it’s a great product in a pinch! All you have to do is spritz on a little spray and let the garment hang dry. The wrinkles will release quickly and it won’t take much effort.
  3. Damp Towel: It has been said that a damp towel can remove wrinkles in no time! Lay down your wrinkled garment on a flat surface and lay a damp towel over top. Lightly press down over the most wrinkled areas to smooth out the wrinkles.

Shut the door and make sure to have a warm enough shower to produce steam. The steam and heat will help to release wrinkles and should be good to go by the time you finish shampooing!

6 Uses For Mayonnaise

When you think of mayonnaise your mind might go right to food! Mayonnaise is the perfect food partner for items such as sandwiches or dips, but have you consider using it around the house? Surprisingly, mayonnaise is a great item to use in a pinch and it can get you out of some tough messes! Check out the list below for 6 uses for mayonnaise:

  1. Gum Removal:  A tried and true trick for removing gum from hair is mayonnaise! Simply apply the mayo directly to the gum and let it sit for a few minutes. Once it has soaked in, pull downwards on the gum and it should slide right out! This also works for tree sap.
  2. Crayon Saver: If your little artist in the house got carried away and colored on the wall, there is a solution! Take a small amount of  mayonnaise and apply it to the crayon marks on the wall. Let it sit for at least 5 minutes (depending on the amount it may need longer) and then give the wall a good clean.
  3. Stuck Rings: I’m sure we have all been there, you put a ring on your finger only to find it won’t come off. If a stuck ring is your problem, simply rub some mayonnaise around the ring and it should slip right off!
  4. Sunburn Relief: If you find your skin has burnt while spending the day in the sun, don’t fear! Mayonnaise is a good alternative to aloe vera if you find yourself without. Rub mayonnaise on the burn to soothe the sting and reduce redness.
  5. Remove Bumper Stickers: There is nothing worst then trying to pull off a bumper sticker, only to find it didn’t completely come off. Use mayonnaise to remove these stickers easier and faster! Cover the sticker in mayonnaise and let it sit for a few minutes. Once it has sat, wipe with a warm water cloth to remove it completely!
  6. House Plants: Are your faux house plants looking dustier then normal? Well, if you really want to make the leaves shine try this trick! Give the plant and leaves a good dusting and then use a small amount of mayo on a soft cloth and shine the leaves. This will give the plant a new shine and look great!

4 Ways To Save Money On Laundry

Laundry is something that is done almost everyday within the house, sometimes a few times a day! Because of this, it can be helpful to figure out where it is possible to save money while doing laundry. This can be done in a few ways and won’t take too much extra time out of your routine. Check out the list below for 4 ways to save money on laundry:

  1. Dryer Sheet Alternatives: Dryer sheets may appear to be priced low in store but if you are buying them on a somewhat regular basis it can add up! Instead, try making your own DIY version of dryer sheets or go with a reusable option such as a plastic dryer ball to save a few extra dollars.
  2. Dry Less: Do you find yourself hanging up clothes that can’t go in the dryer to avoid shrinkage or because of special wash instructions? If you are already in the habit of pulling out clothes to air dry, try doing this for a full wash load every so often. Air drying clothing will cut back on cost by not using the dryer and save energy!
  3. Soap Options: When it comes to choosing a laundry soap,  the options are endless. If you prefer to buy your laundry soap in store, make sure to try and use coupons and combine those with in store sales to save some extra money.  If you prefer to make your own laundry soap, DIY options can save you a ton and most recipes only call for a few household ingredients and a few minutes of your time.
  4. Larger Wash Loads: If you can avoid doing several small loads of laundry in comparison to one larger load, you might find yourself saving some money! You will use less energy overall and use the washer/dryer less by doing medium to large loads of laundry rather then smaller ones.

We have a few ways to show you how to save those extra pennies and keep your health in check. Check out the list below for 6 ways to eat healthier on a budget:

  2. Frozen Veggies & Fruit: While fresh is always a better option when it comes to produce, it isn’t always affordable.Try to stock pile a few different types of frozen produce to save some money and keep up healthy eating. Most items are frozen to keep flavor and nutrients sealed in, just make sure there isn’t anything extra additive wise in the ingredients.
  3. Stick With Water: Water is the best way to save money! Ditch juice, pop and any other sugary drinks at the store and stick with water. Not only is this a great move for your health, it will  save you a ton!  You can also add fruit to your water for flavoring and to help with sugar cravings.
  4. Generic Labels: Just because the in store item has a fancy label, doesn’t make it healthier. On your next shop, try comparing your favorite brands to no name items. If the ingredients are the same, make the switch to save some money without sacrificing your health!

3 Ways To Save Money With Gardening

Gardening season is in full bloom as we finish off spring and welcome summer with open arms.  Gardening is not only a great hobby but it can also be a great way to save money on your weekly grocery bill. This is because we can grow important grocery staples right in our own backyard. Check out the list below for 3 ways to save money while gardening:

  1. Herbs: Store bought pre-packed herbs can be really expensive in store.  You can pay up to $4 a package and most times these herbs won’t last longer than a couple of weeks. So this is why if you grow them in your home garden, you can save some serious cash! You can grow anything from basil to cilantro to even mint leaves. This will save you money in the long run and you can cut exactly the amount you need.
  2. Vegetables:  Another great way to save money is to grow your own vegetables right in your backyard! It doesn’t take too much knowledge or expertise to grow the most common veggies and you’ll get to eat something you have grown yourself! The options are endless but if you are just starting out try growing items like: tomatoes, green onions and even lettuce if you want something a little more advance.
  3. Fruit: Last but not least, fruit is a great item to have in your home garden. Having fruit in the garden is a great way to save some extra dollars at the grocery store and if you are extra frugal try growing items that can be frozen and saved.  Berries are one of the best fruits to grow as they don’t take up too much space, they can be eaten right away or frozen  and you’ll know exactly what is going in and on your fruit during the growing process. Make sure to try one of these options this gardening season!
