DIY Brown Sugar

There is nothing worse than starting to cook or bake, only to realize you are missing the one key ingredient you really need. When it comes to baking, brown sugar  is usually the one item that seems to run out right in the middle of a recipe. The good news is, if you have run out of brown sugar but still have some sugar on hand you can make your own version of brown sugar.  It works exactly the same as brown sugar and won’t take long very long to whip up! Check out the recipe below to make your own DIY brown sugar:

Ingredients Needed:

  • 1 Tablespoon Of Molasses
  • 1 Cup Of White Granulated Sugar

Instructions:

  1. Start by deciding how much brown sugar you will need. The ratio for this recipe should be 1 tablespoon of molasses to 1 cup of white sugar. Combine as much as you need for your recipe.
  2. Stir this mixture either by hand or with an electric mixer. The sugar and molasses may seem like it doesn’t mix together but after some elbow grease it will start to look light and fluffy.  Continue to mix until it has reached it’s desired consistency. If you need darker brown sugar, up the amount of molasses.
  3. Once sugar is light and has reached its desired look, use sugar as needed.
  4. For storing: Store sugar in an air tight container and stir as needed.

follow me 10 Uses for Orange Peels

Who knew there were so many ways to use orange peels?! This fruit peel works for cleaning, deodorizing, candles and more. Check out all the ideas below and be sure to leave a comment if you have any more ideas or uses for orange peels!

#1 – Citrus-Scented Bath Powder: After a long day at work, school, or maybe even the DMV (those lines can be the source of some brutal headaches), some of us like to march to the bathroom and run a nice hot bath to relax in. If you’re that type, this is for you, especially if you enjoy the fine smell of orange. If you let some orange peels sit on a counter and dry out, you can grind them down to a powder. You can use this powder like you would any store-bought bath powder and have a nice, “Florida orange” smelling bath, courtesy of your local supermarket.

#2 – Wood Polish: If you happen to have some fresh orange peels lying about (fresh and moist peels, preferably) you now have the proper equipment to give your old wood a nice, new shine. The oils inside the peels of oranges act as a fine polish for your wood dishes and utensils. Just give whatever piece of wood you’re working with a tough scrub with the peel and, in no time, you’ll have a great, deep new shine. For outside the kitchen, you can use this to give beat-up, dusty, wooden sofa legs a store-like finish as well.

#3 – Aromatic Candles: While you could go out to your local thrift store and buy a candle with a miniature painting of Elvis on the case, sometimes its easier and more enjoyable to do things at home. If you’ve got a few oranges lying around; when you’re peeling them, try to pull the stem out along with some of the shell (cutting the orange’s shell in half and pulling the stem out on one side works best with this. Once you got this all worked out, fill this bowl-like orange peel with some form of oil, making sure to get that stem well soaked in it. Light the oily stem as if it were a wick and you’ll have a nice, orange-scented candle keeping your home smelling great. If you have trouble keeping the stem lit, you can tie a piece of twin around the base of the stem and wrap it around the stem to help wick the oil up to burn.

#4 – Natural Medicine: If you just so happen to be a character in a B-grade horror flick, where your heart is constantly racing as you anticipate where the villain is going to come from, just take a page from the medicine men from the days of old. Many ancient pharmacists had concluded that oranges were an amazing natural medicine for many years, whether they were bitter or ripe. More importantly, orange peels have also been proven to decrease blood pressure through direct consumption. So, if you ever find yourself in a film directed by Sam Raimi, remember to bring a couple of orange peels along; it might just save you from a heart attack, brought upon by a camera flying through a cabin window.

#5 – Brown Sugar Preserver: We all hate it when we open up our bag of brown sugar, only to find it all clumped up and stuck together, especially when you’re in the middle of preparing a dish where time is of the essence. Thankfully, if you just finished going through that bag of Florida oranges, all those peels can help keep your brown sugar an actual sugar. Just keep some orange peels mixed in with it all in the bag, and the peels will absorb most of the moisture that gets in, keeping your sugar from solidifying and turning into that all too familiar bag of brown rocks.

#6 – Insect Repellent: While you could go out and buy all kinds of different insect repellents, this one for your skin; this one for the food you’re making on the grill; and this one for whatever reason, you could simply go out and buy some oranges. After you’re done enjoying your amazing citrus snack (definitely better for you than those potato chips), just use the orange peels to keep the pests away. Rub them on your skin instead of spraying some random mixture of chemicals you bought at the store, or just lay the peels around. In addition to just smelling really good, those peels will keep a variety of insects away; snails, mosquitos, and even those pesky ants that seem to be everywhere.

#7 – Make-Shift Sponge: If you have a relatively fresh orange peel, one that’s still relatively moist, you can make a nice, quick sponge of it. Just use the inside of your fresh peel to thoroughly scrub whatever surface it is you are cleaning up. It’s safe for use on many surfaces; metal, wood, countertops, floors, et cetera. As an added bonus, your fresh peel will leave a nice, citrusy scent on the surfaces you clean it with. Not only will your stovetop be cleaned, but it won’t smell like that burnt chicken breast from a few weeks ago anymore.

#8 – Fertilizer: If you’ve always wanted to start your own garden, but the soil at your home just doesn’t seem to be the greatest, nutrient-rich stuff you’ve ever worked with, you can always just get some oranges. Once you finish your healthy treat, you can compost those peels and make that dead-grass-covered patch of land into a fertile tract of soil that will let those rose bushes you’ve always wanted to plant grow to be green and strong.

#9 – Kindling: If you’re ever short on twigs, branches, or any other kind of small kindling that you need to start a family bonfire in the back yard, orange peels can help you out here as well. Just toss them into your fire and they’ll burn rather easily, especially if they’re fresher, as the oils in them will allow them to burn easier. Just remember to start fires responsibly; I don’t want the police knocking on the door because you told them that I told you to go out there and start fires.

#10 – Deodorizer: Of course, considering their usually powerful citrus scent, it wouldn’t be very shocking to see “deodorizer” on this list. Just set a few out and let them sit for a while, if your using them just to make an “okay smelling” room smell good. However, if you want to deal with bad odors, you’ll have to be a little more strategic; put them in the bottom of trash cans, put them down the trash disposal to deal with old, moldy food smells coming from there; and you’ll want to make a sort of dish from a peel and fill it with salt or baking soda if you want to de-stench your fridge.

How To Extend The Life Of Avocados

Avocados can be very tricky when it comes to ripeness and usage. Most times when you buy avocados from the store, they are hard and not ready to use. So, you let them soften up in the fridge or on the counter and before you know they have jumped right into being ripe! So what do you do next if you can’t use them right away? Well,  there is a way to extend the life of ripe avocados and it won’t take more than 5 minutes. Check out the instructions below for how to extend the life of avocados:

Items Needed:

  • Ripe Avocados
  • Large Ziploc Freezer Bags
  • Lemon Juice

Instructions:

  1. Remove all the insides of the ripe avocados and scoop them into the freezer bag.
  2. Add 1/2 to 1 teaspoons of lemon juice to the same bag.  Close the bag slightly and mash the ingredients together in the bag.
  3. Seal tightly and store in the freezer for as long as needed. When you are ready to use the avocados pop the bag out of the freezer and place in cold water for fast defrosting. If you don’t need it right away you can also defrost them in the fridge overnight.

Ever wonder what to do with this amazingly popular stuff?! Coconut Oil that is…it is an amazing product that you can use for a LOT more than just cooking. It’s also extremely good for you so be sure to try and get in as much as you can. icon wink 10 Uses for Coconut Oil You can pick some up here on Amazon too!

Check out the ideas below:

#1 – Shaving Cream: If you are one of the Robertsons (of Duck Dynasty fame) who somehow got their hands on this list, you can ignore this step entirely (as we all know those beards aren’t coming off anytime soon). However, if you don’t own a successful duck call business, this part might serve you pretty well since the rest of us all need to shave once in a while. Coconut oil can serve as a pretty fine substitute for shaving cream when you’re getting ready to go to work in the morning. Also, if you rubbed the electric razor a little too hard on your skin, coconut oil can also serve as a fine after shave lotion.

#2 – Leather Cleaner and Protector: Alright, Dad’s going through a mid-life crisis. He’s gone out and bought a Harley, got his hair all spiked up and, most horrifying of all, he’s bought a tacky leather jacket. Now, as much as you love him and respect his choice of lifestyle, you are more than a little angry he has no knowledge about caring for that new jacket of his. Thankfully, he also bought several tubs of coconut oil in his lifestyle changing haste, and these tubs will now (unfortunately) save your dad’s  new jacket, as coconut oil serves as a fine leather treating substance.

#3 – Oil For Wood Bowls and Boards: If one doesn’t maintain their woodware properly, the consequences can be rather irritating. Some pretty serious stains can settle in, and smells can linger a lot (I’m not joking; you can be eating a nice salad and you have a chance of catching a whiff of that fish from last week). Coconut oil can serve as a great way to get these tough stains and smells out of your favorite wood bowl and off your usual cutting board. Just use it as you would any other wood treating oil; a fine, thorough rub into the wood and your woodware is fresh once again.

#4 – Lubricant: Ok, if you remember our dad from back at #2, he came home with a Harley-Davidson that’s seen better days. The thing squeaks so much, you’d think he brought rats home with him in that spikey hair of his. Now, the problem is, the police are finally getting on you about these claims of “noise pollution” coming from the garage down in the basement; so you have to clean the thing up because your father’s not here because he’s hanging out with bikers who are half his age. Well, forget the WD-40, as coconut oil serves an extremely effective lubricant, which is just what you need to keep things quiet while your father continues going through this James Dean-esque phase (DISCLAIMER: “Rebel Without A Cause” was a pretty good movie).

#5 – Impromptu Neosporin: Accidents happen a lot around the house in this day and age. Little Jimmy can scrape his knee playing on the play set in the backyard, Frank can give himself a little cut playing with the engine block of the family minivan, etc. Thankfully, coconut oil can keep those minor scrapes from developing into worse things, like infections. Just dab a little of it over any cut, scrape, or scratch and put a Band-Aid on top of that injury. An added bonus is that it smells a lot better than anything you could pick up at the drugstore on the corner.

#6 – Mouthwash: Just ask your children, Agent Cool Blue isn’t the tastiest thing in the world, and even you can attest about the taste of the Listerine on the counter. Now, what if you had something that generally didn’t taste terrible, what if you had something that might actually taste pretty GOOD while your swishing it around in your mouth, getting all the gunk and goo cleaned out? Coconut oil my friend; just toss it around in your mouth for a good 10-15 minutes in the morning to clean your mouth up a bit. When all is said and done, just rinse the leftovers out with water and spit.

#7 – Deodorant: (DISCLAIMER: I’m seriously starting to expect that anything in this world can be used as deodorant; I could honestly write an entire list of all the stuff I’ve seen that can be used as deodorant.) Now, here’s something really unique you’d never expect out of coconut oil; it can also be used as deodorant! Who would’ve thought, huh?! In all seriousness, though, coconut oil is an extremely effective tool that can keep your son’s pits sweet-smelling, and if used in conjunction with baking soda, it can be even more effective. Just massage it in and things will smell a lot less like a gym locker room on a bad Tuesday.

#8 – Moisturizer: While some of the moisturizers we buy at stores smell pretty good, some smell like someone just scooped up some sludge from a pit in Mexico. Some of us don’t want to pay the high prices for the expensive moisturizers. Luckily, most people like the smell of coconut, the mere scent of which invokes images of Hawaiian beaches and Caribbean shores. Thankfully for you, coconut oil is a nice, natural moisturizer that you can use on anything from dry elbows to chapped lips!

#9 – Energy Supplement: Energy drinks lift us up, but they eventually bring us down even lower than when we started. Sometimes a real pick me up is needed to get us through our busy lives. This is where our fine palm-tree-borne friend comes into play. Coconut oil has been proven to give men and women alike nice bursts of energy when things are getting pretty darn droopy-eyed. So, when that heart-attack inducing (It’s been proven by science, can’t argue with that) energy drink starts eyeing you from across the desk, remember to try and slip yourself a small bit of coconut oil and see how that works out (Hey, at least it probably won’t send you to the ER).

#10 – Athlete’s Foot Combatant: You know, with the amount of products that claim to keep Athlete’s Foot at bay, you’d wonder how all of those fancy foot cream companies aren’t out of business these days. Coconut oil also works well at keeping Athlete’s Foot away. A quick massage of the stuff on your foot and you’ll be good for a while.

6 Ways To Fight Candy Cravings

Losing weight and eating healthy can be a hard battle to manage as it is. Then try adding cravings for your favorite treat or sweet and it suddenly becomes about ten times harder doesn’t it? Well, the good news is there is a solution to fighting those sweet cravings and it’s easier than you might think. It’s all about replacing what you are craving with a healthy alternative. Check out the list below for 6 ways to fight candy cravings:

  1. Nuts: While nuts aren’t a sweet item, they do make a great replacement for candy. They work well because you can grab a handful like you would with candy but instead you are replacing sweets with a protein packed snack. Also, if salt isn’t a problem try snacking on pistachios for an extra yummy treat.
  2. Berries: Berries are a great alternative to candy as they are healthy and can be prepared in many ways. Try covering the berries in yogurt and letting them cool to make a fun treat. If you prefer the berries just as they are, freeze them for an addicting snack.
  3. Dried Fruit: Dried fruit is a great way to get sweetness and a bit of a crunch without the calories. Make sure the dried fruit doesn’t have anything extra added into it or try to create your own DIY version at home!
  4. Chewing Gum: While it won’t taste like a sour candy or a sugary sweet, gum can make for a great replacement in a pinch or on the go. Make sure your gum of choice is sugar-free and doesn’t include any additives or added coloring.
  5. Grapes: Grapes are a great on the go or as a late night snack if your craving sugary candy. They can be eaten as they are, sprinkled with a little bit of sugar-free jello powder for a sour treat or they make a delicious frozen treat!
  6. Greek Yogurt: Yogurt may not have much to do with candy, but it can make a great replacement if you’re looking for something sweet. Try making a sweet yogurt parfait by using the following: flavored or unflavored greek yogurt, fruit (fresh or frozen), honey or even a small square of melted dark chocolate. This parfait should hit all your sweet spots and keep you away from the candy!

6 Ways To Make Your Hair Grow Faster

Hair growth can be a tricky feat for anyone no matter what type of hair you have. Some of us have hair that seems to grow at a turtles pace and takes up to 3 months just to grow an inch, where as some of us have hair that seems to grow overnight! Well, no matter what type of hair you might be dealing with, these tips could help you out! Check out the list below for 6 ways to help your hair grow at a faster rate and have it become long and luscious before you know it:

  1. Trim: It may seem counterproductive to trim hair when you are trying to grow it out. But it has been shown that if you trim your ends every 6 weeks or so it will encourage your hair to grow longer. It will also keep your hair looking healthy by getting rid of dead ends.
  2. Drink Water: Like many things, drinking lots of water can help with your overall health and hair growth. Drinking at least 6-8 cups a day will increase the strength of your hair and keep it looking shiny and healthy.
  3. Brush Rules: You might be surprised to hear that brushing your hair when wet can not only damage hair, it can prevent hair from growing all together. If you must brush hair while wet, use a wide tooth comb to avoid breakage and damage.
  4. Proteins: We are what we eat right? Well when it comes to our hair this is very true. It’s important to have a high protein intake when trying to grow your hair out as it will keep your hair strong and encourage growth. Make sure to add in high protein vegetables, meat and nuts to your daily diet.
  5. Hair Washing: To avoid stripping healthy oils away from hair, only wash hair every second or third day. This will help your hair keep its protective layer of oils and helps it grow longer. Using a dry shampoo on non wash days can help refresh the hair and keep it looking great!
  6. Reduce Styling: The best way for your hair to grow is natural and loose. Avoid tight up do’s that might bring on breakage and try to avoid styling products while growing out hair. This will prevent the hair strands from weakening and will help you grow out hair at a faster rate.

4 Ways To Extend The Life Of Kitchen Knives

The one tool that probably gets the most use in the kitchen would be our kitchen knives. Whether it be plain kitchen knives or expensive chef’s knives they all need to be taken care of. By taking extra care of these items, it will extend their life and potentially save you from having to spend more money on a new set. But what’s the best way to take care of kitchen knives? Check out the list below for 4 ways to extend the life of your kitchen knives:

  1. No Dishwasher: A good rule of thumb for any good quality knife is to avoid the dishwasher for cleaning. The detergent can’t strip the knife and leave it looking dull. Opt in for hand washing and air drying for any and all knives to extend their life and avoid rust.
  2. Knife Block: The best way to keep knives looking their best is to store them in a knife block.  This will keep them from getting scratched or dented, as they would if they were thrown in a drawer. This is also a great way to keep blades away from little fingers or accidental cuts.
  3. Avoid Sliding: This tip might be one your don’t think about often. When you finish chopping something on the cutting board, do you every find yourself sweeping the food with the blade of the knife? This is not only bad for the cutting board, it’s bad for the blade! By doing this the blade will dull over time and show damage easier. Simply flip the knife over to the non blade side to avoid this and sweep away!
  4. Sharpen: A great way to keep your kitchen knives looking good is to sharpen them yearly. Nothing fancy is needed to do so, just a simple sharpening block or handheld tool. Sharpen yearly or every 6 months if necessary to prevent knives from denting and to remove any cosmetic damage.

6 Ways To Get Super Soft Skin

When we are dealing with freezing temperatures and cold winds, our skin takes a pretty hard hit. Our skin will dry out and sometimes even crack if it’s not properly taken care of! The important thing to remember is moisturize our skin on a regular basis. But is that enough to keep it super soft and touchable? Sometimes it needs a little more love in that department. Luckily we have compiled a list below to highlight 6 great ways to get our skin super soft, even in the coldest of temperatures. Check out the list below:

  1. Cool Water: Finishing your shower with a cool water rinse can really make the difference to your skin. When you finish with hot water your skin will dry out faster and become rough. Cool water will help the skin tighten and shine.
  2. Moisturize: To achieve the softest skin, make sure to moisturize directly after showering and drying. This is the best time as your skin will soak in the lotion right away and keep you moisturized all day.
  3. Coconut Oil: If you haven’t tried coconut oil for your skin yet, you are missing out! Not only does it hydrate your skin and keep it soft throughout the day, it will also give you a healthy glow.
  4. Drink Water: One of the most important factors to consider when trying to achieve soft skin is how much water you drink. The more water you drink the more your skin will shine and glow. This is especially important for people who suffer from extra dry skin or  skin conditions. Another great way to keep your skin looking healthy is to increase fruits and vegetables in your diet as the water content will help keep you hydrated and looking great!
  5. Protect: One of the most important things we can do for our skin health is protect it with suscreen. Even the slightest rays can dry out and damage skin over time. So the best way to protect skin daily is to apply a lotion that has a SPF built in to it or apply sunscreen after moisturizing.
  6. Linens & Towels: Keeping towels and sheets washed and cleaned on a regular basis is a great way to keep skin happy.  The reason this iso important is because oils collect on our linens and towels overtime and those old oils are not good for your skin on contact. Also, make sure your laundry detergent doesn’t aggravate your skin.

6 Ways To Fight Dry Hair

Let’s admit it: Winter is cold and hard enough as it is without fighting the battle against dry hair! Cold temperatures and wind can really do a number on your hair as the low temperatures will actually pull moisture from hair. So how do we fight against the effects of winter? Well, there are a few preventive measures we can take to keep hair looking smooth and silky. Check out the 6 ways below to fight dry hair:

  1. Wash Once Every Two: Washing our hair once every two days can really help fight dryness. By only washing once every second day, you will lock in healthy moisture and nutrients to keep your hair looking great!
  2. Warm, Not Hot: Another way to prevent dry hair is to turn down the shower water temperature. A super hot shower can strip the moisture from your hair and leave it feeling lifeless and dry. Try a warm shower instead to help hair retain moisture.
  3. Brush Less: It may sound strange to brush your hair less, but it does help when preventing dry hair. If your hair is already dry to begin with, excessive brushing can make it fall out at a faster rate! Make sure to be gentle when brushing hair and let hair dry before brushing through the strands. If you are brushing your hair while wet, try to use a wide tooth comb instead.
  4. Blow Drying: If you blow dry your hair on a regular basis, try this trick to avoid drying out your hair in the process! Blow dry on a low heat or a cool heat as the hot heat can damage hair easily and cause the strands to fray. Also, make sure to gently brush out hair when using heat to avoid damage.
  5.  Hair Breaks: It is important to remember to give your hair a break. Much like our skin, our hair needs a break from treatment and styling. Try to give your hair at least a one day break in between styling and salon treatments to avoid breakage and damage to your hair and scalp.
  6. Egg Treatment: It may sounds strange, but eggs can do wonders for dry hair! Wash damp hair with a few egg yolks , let sit for 2o minutes and rinse as normal. Once you have rinsed the egg out completely, shampoo hair as normal. The egg with restore moisture and leave you with a silky shine!

Little Money Moves that Add up to Big Savings

When it comes to saving money in your day-to-day life, you may think it means making big changes that will inconvenience you, make you give up things that you enjoy and leave you feeling like you are working for no reason other than to save it. Here are some things that are small changes you can make that will eventually lead to bigger savings in the long run.

Start making some of your own bought conveniences.

You would probably be amazed if I told you that you spend, on average, twice as much (way more in many cases!)  for the convenience items like cleaners, cake mixes, shredded cheese and similar items that are meant to cut time in our daily lives. You can make cake mixes for pennies and cleaners for less than a dollar. Most of these take just as few as five minutes to throw together. Is that 5 minutes worth paying $3 for when you could do it for 50 cents?

Start using up everything you do buy.

Many liquids like dish soap, liquid laundry soap and hand soap can be used up by simply adding a bit of water to the bottle and giving it a quick shake. What we commonly toss out is usually a couple more uses. This can add up to lots of money that you are literally just throwing away. Food is the same way. If you have peanut butter or mayonnaise jars that are being tossed because your knife can’t get the last of it out, use a small rubber spatula to do it.

When it comes to money management, keep track of your accounts.

There are so many fees you pay for over-drafting your bank account, not keeping the minimum balance in it and using out of network ATMs. Be careful and conscious of your money and you will probably see a savings of a couple hundred dollars a year.

Save all your loose change.

Even if it is just a couple pennies here and there. You will not notice the money being “gone” and it will add up quickly. In just a few months, you could have 50-100 dollars in there depending on how many family members contribute to it.

Become a list maker.

Having a list allows you to spend less at the grocery store, on home improvement projects and everywhere in between. Lists are like goals. They keep us on track and force us to not deviate from them. Chances are, having a list, even just at the grocery store, will also save you time.

Pay Yourself

Instead of saving what is left after you pay bills, include paying yourself as one of your bills. Figure out how much you can usually spare from your paychecks and set that money aside as you set aside money for bills that week.  If you worry you will spend it, place it somewhere that is more inconvenient to touch such as a savings account that doesn’t have a debit card attached to it.

Wear your clothes more than once before washing.

If your clothing is not smelly or stained, there is no reason to automatically toss it in the wash. If you really want to have your clothes feel refreshed, try hanging them on the line for a couple hours. You will use less soap and electricity if you don’t wash everything that was worn for only a few hours and you clothing will last longer, too.

Ever wonder what you can do with Vinegar?! This stuff is like magic…there are so many things you can do with it from cleaning to clearing up bruises. Check out the list of 10 things you can do with Vinegar and if you have anything to add, please add it to the comments.

#1 – Clean Your Bath with Baking Soda and Vinegar: The bath can get quite dirty after much use and a lot of neglect. That doesn’t matter though, because you can clean your bath quick and easy with both baking soda and vinegar. Just give dirty areas a good dusting of baking soda, follow with vinegar, and scrub vigorously with a sponge while the mixture fizzes away. Clean away any leftovers with water. Just a word of warning, you should probably have a window open so those fumes can go somewhere.

#2 – Clear up and Prevent Bruises: All of us have suffered a nasty spill of some kind (and I’m not talking about the kind where someone drops a drink) and those bruises can become extremely sore after a while. However, you can make all those nasty black-and-blues go away, just soak some cotton gauze in a little bit of vinegar, apply it to the bruised area, and let it sit for around an hour.

#3 – Brighten Your Laundry: You have a choice, spend a pretty penny on some fancy “all-color, stain-fighting, super-effective” bleach, or you can spend a couple of bucks on some plain, white vinegar. Just add 1/2 a cup of that stuff to your wash cycle to reinvigorate and brighten all the colors in all of your laundry loads; reds, blues, greens, yellows, blacks, and whites!

#4 – Hot Vinegar Drain Cleaner: Is the sink not draining as quick as usual? Chances are it’s probably a little clogged up by grime and such. This isn’t a problem though, all you need to do is pour roughly a quarter of a cup of vinegar and a quarter of a cup of baking soda down your drain, wait a little more than 15 minutes, and then follow it all down the drain with hot (preferably boiling) water.

#5 – Frost-Proof Your Windows: We’ve all had to wait that dreaded 5 minutes every winter morning; the windows are slowly-but-surely clearing up and you’re already 10 minutes late for work. You can keep Jack Frost off your windows by spraying a solution that’s 3 parts vinegar and 1 part water on your car windows every few weeks.

#6 – Deodorizer: Hate having to hold your breath when open  your trunk to put the groceries way, or maybe that musty old closet is getting to be a little too unbearable? You can freshen up the smell of these places quite easily! All you need to do is give a slice of white bread a soak in some white vinegar, place the soggy piece of bread on a plate, and keep it in that closet or trunk for a night. Things will start smelling good again in no time!

#7 – Clean Fresh Produce: Whether you are the gardening type or you just took a stroll through the produce section at your local supermarket, you never know what’s clinging to the surface of your fresh fruits and vegetables. If you’re not feeling safe about your food, you can always wash them with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar mixed with 1 1/2 quarts of plain water for a nice, bacteria-cleansing wash.

#8 – Clean Rust Off of Old Tools: So, you’ve finally gotten grandpa’s old tool box open, expecting gold and treasure, and just got some rusty old Depression-era hammers and screwdrivers. You can clean up granddad’s old tools real easy; just submerge them in some plain white vinegar for a couple of days until the rust is all gone.

#9 – Streak-less window cleaner: If you have some vinegar, water, and dish soap lying around, you can make a window cleaner that outperforms most others. Put 2 cups of water, 1/4 of a cup of plain white vinegar, and 1/2 a teaspoon of your favorite dish soap/detergent all into a spray bottle and have clean, clear windows in no time at all.

#10 – Keep Pests off your Pets: Is Fido biting and scratching away at himself because flea season has started in your state (Deeply sorry for those in the deep south who have to deal with the pests year-round)? You can keep those bugs away by filling a spray bottle with equal parts vinegar and water and applying it to your dog or cat’s coat before rubbing it in. Be careful with cats though, they’ve been known to get a little resistant and violent when vinegar and its “horrific” scent get involved.

I love saving time in the kitchen because I know the best food is the homemade food I cook myself. So when I find tips and tricks like this next one, it makes my cooking life a whole lot easier…

Looking for another valuable use for that KitchenAid stand mixer? How about shredding meat. It works just great to shred some cooked chicken breasts, a boneless pork butt, or beef roast. If you have ever tried to “pull” a pork shoulder with forks, you know this can take a bit of time. With the KitchenAid and the normal beater attachment, I shredded a pound of cooked chicken breast straight from the slow cooker in under 30 seconds.

1. Take your meat straight from cooking and toss it in the mixing bowl.

2. Make sure the beater attachment is in place.

3. Raise the bowl and hit a low power setting for about 30 seconds.

4. Enjoy your shredded meat.

So you no longer need to hesitate to make recipes like chicken enchiladas, pulled pork, or beef barbecue because of this tedious job again. If you don’t have a KitchenAid, here is just another great reason why you might just want to take the plunge. icon wink Shred Meat with a KitchenAid Mixer in 30 Seconds!

5 Foods That Will Keep Skin Clear

Skin can sometimes get neglected as it’s easy to forget that your face needs love just like the rest of your body. It can also be a hard task trying to keep up with skin and beauty routines on a regular basis.  So what’s the best way to keep your skin clear without sacrificing too much time? Well, one great way is to eat foods that will nourish skin making it feel better than ever before. Check out the 5 foods below that will keep your skin clear:

  1. Dark Berries: Berries are well known for being packed with antioxidants and amazing health properties. So try to add these sweet snacks in to your diet as often as possible. Stick to darker berries such as blackberries, blueberries and even strawberries for the best results!
  2. Tomatoes: Tomatoes are a great add in to any diet because of how healthy and fresh they can be. But did you know they also come packed with Vitamin C? This will help keep your skin from sagging and it will keep it nice and clear.
  3. Tofu: Tofu isn’t for everyone, but if you can work it into your diet your skin will thank you! Tofu is packed with protein and calcium, both of which are great for your keeping your skin healthy and assisting with the healing of existing skin conditions.
  4. Kale: By now you might have heard why kale is placed in the super food category. It is full of vitamins, minerals, protein, calcium and much, much more. Even a small amount of kale on a regular basis can make all the difference when it comes to skin quality and look.
  5. Water: I guess this one isn’t really a “food” but it will keep your skin clear. Here’s an easy tip that will keep you drinking water all day long…I find that if I don’t have a bottle of water (I use a Victoria’s Secret one I got for free awhile back) filled up and right next to me, I almost forget to drink any water unless I’m eating. So, just fill a bottle and keep it next to you…every time you look at it just take a sip. I sip my water all day long and before I know it, I’ve refilled it about 6 or 7 times!

5 Uses For Coffee Grounds

Most people love a good cup of coffee during the day. But what happens when the coffee pot is empty and all your left with is coffee grounds? The first thought is to throw them away, but they have more uses then you might think. Not only are they a helpful ingredient for cleaning, they also have a few uses around the house. Check out the 5 uses below and you might just reconsider throwing away those grounds after your last cup of joe!

  1. Scour: Coffee grounds are one of the best items to use for cleaning pots and pans. Add some grounds to any dishware or pots/pans and use them to scour away stuck on food and residue. The grounds will help lift any pieces that are stubborn  and with a quick rinse you’ll be left with sparkling results.
  2. Sidewalk Salt: Believe it or not old coffee grounds make the perfect replacement for sidewalk salt. If the pathways around your homes are icy, simply spread some coffee grounds on the areas to melt the ice! This is not only a great way to save some money, it’s also much better for the environment!
  3. Plant Food: If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to garden fertilizer, grounds are the answer! Use coffee grounds just as you would with a regular fertilizer on all plants and flowers. The coffee grounds have a ton of nutrients in them that will release into the plants over time.
  4. Deodorize: Does your freezer let off a funky smell every so often? If you are looking for an easy fix to this issue, try placing an open container of coffee grounds in the freezer. The grounds will soak up any odors and leave your freezer with a fresh smell.
  5. Scratch Repair: This might be the best use yet for coffee grounds. If you have any wood furniture that is scratched try this:  Put old coffee grounds in a bowl and use a small brush or q tip to paint over the scratches. The more you paint the darker the repair colour will be, so make sure to test this before doing the whole surface.
