How To Keep Avocados From Browning
Avocados are not only delicious but are packed full of good nutrients and health benefits! However, once oxygen comes into contact with the inside of the avocado they start to brown and the process can move quite quickly. The good news is there is a way to prevent browning for a few days, allowing you to get the most out of your avocados.
There are two really great methods that will extend the life of your fresh avocado. The first method is for those who are using one half and want to save the other for a little later. Once you have cut the avocado in half, use the side that does not have the pit first. For the second half, leave the pit attached and rub some lemon or lime juice over the top surface. Place in a sealed bag and try to insure that no air is left in the bag, then refrigerate till your ready to use it. This can keep the half fresh for up to 2 days.
The second method is for those who want to prepare avocados ahead of time and keep them fresh till your ready to use them. Remove the avocado from the skin and prepare as you prefer (diced, sliced, chopped etc.). Once you have prepared it the way you want, immediately submerge in a bath of ice water. Keep the pieces in the water till your ready to use them, this keeps them away from oxygen. They will stay fresh for up to four hours in the water.
