Sloppy Tots? Really?
Sloppy Joes is a favorite in my family, but when I started gathering friends that couldn’t eat the buns, I started making Sloppy Tots. My kids thought I was crazy for a hot minute, then they realized they were kind of like the chili cheese tots they used to get at Sonic, before all the ones in our town closed. It solved a couple of problems in my family: people that couldn’t tolerate wheat or gluten could eat them, they are a fresh idea that my family loves, and they are a lot less messy than the originals!
Why Make Sloppy Tots from Scratch? Isn’t There a Can for That?
Well, there is, but Sloppy Tots from scratch is easy and simple, made with things I have around my kitchen. Plus, I love to control what goes into things I make. I’m not an artificial kind of girl. And it never fails. Whenever I wanted Sloppy Tots, I didn’t have any cans of sauce in my pantry. But I always have ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. The bonus is that it’s actually less expensive to make your own than to buy the cans. Even on sale, the cans are about $1, but I can make Sloppy Tots for about $.91, with the ingredients not on sale! I love that!
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 1/2 bell pepper, finely diced
- 4 cloves garlic, finely diced
- 3/4 C ketchup
- 3 t brown sugar
- 1 t yellow mustard
- 1 t Worcestershire sauce
- 1 bag Tater Tots
- 1 C cheddar cheese
- Cook the tater tots according to the package.
- Brown the ground beef with the onion, pepper, and garlic. Drain.
- In a bowl, mix the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour over meat and stir to mix well.
- Simmer 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Serve over crispy tots and sprinkle with cheese.
Sloppy Tots for Office Parties
Well, not really. The tot part doesn’t work well. However, the Sloppy part works great! Toss it in the Crock-Pot and plug it in at your desk. Bring some buns with you and you will have a rockin’ lunch party! People will love the meaty goodness wrapped in a bun, that helps them get their mind back on track during the afternoon lull before leaving work.
