Homemade Pizza ~ An Amazing Weeknight or Weekend Meal
Pizza is one of the mainstays of our diet, but why purchase a frozen one, or even delivery, when you can make one simply and fairly quickly? The crust is easy to prepare and the sauce even more so. I love knowing exactly what is going into my pizza and not having to wait for delivery.
A Few Ingredients Make Homemade Pizza Fabulous
Everything tastes better when it’s fresh made, and pizza is the same way. A simple crust of flour, yeast, water, and seasonings makes the foundation of the pizza not just a crust to hold the toppings, but a flavorful treat in and of itself. The sauce is delicious as well, and a great way to bring health tomatoes into your diet. Add your favorite toppings, and you have the best pizza you’ll ever taste.
Ingredients
- 1 C warm water
- 1 T yeast
- 1 t sugar or honey
- 2 1/2 C flour
- 2 T olive oil
- 1 T minced garlic
- 1 t salt
- 1 15 oz can tomato sauce
- 1/2 t oregano
- 1/2 t basil
- 1/2 t marjoram
- 1/2 t red pepper flakes
- 1 t minced garlic
- 8 oz shredded mozzarella
- toppings of your choice
Instructions
- In a small bowl, add the warm water, yeast, and honey. Let yeast "proof", or get foamy.
- In another small bowl, place the tomato sauce, oregano, basil, marjoram, pepper flakes, and 1 t minced garlic. Stir to combine and set aside to let the flavors bloom.
- In a large bowl, place the flour, olive oil, 1 T minced garlic, and salt. When the yeast has gotten foamy, add it to the flour and mix well, kneading in the bowl with your hand for about 2 minutes. Cover with a clean towel and let rest 5 minutes.
- Heat oven to 425 degrees F.
- On a pizza stone or cookie sheet, either spray with cooking spray or sprinkle with corn meal. Press the pizza dough out onto the sheet, until it is of even thickness with a slight lip around the edge to hold in the toppings.
- Spread the sauce over the top. You may not use all of the sauce.
- Sprinkle about a half of a cup of cheese on the sauce and top with your favorite toppings. Add the remainder of the cheese.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
