Ingredients

- Cupcakes
- Box of white cake mix + ingredients on box
- yellow food coloring
- orange food coloring (or yellow + red to make orange)
- Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1/2 cup buttermilk, room temperature
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons vanilla or other desired flavoring
- 2 pounds confectioners' sugar
- orange food coloring (or yellow+ red to make orange)
- bag for frosting
- 1M Wilton frosting tip
Instructions
- Make cake mix as instructed on the box. Divide batter into two separate bowls. Make one yellow, and the other orange. This will take quite a bit of food coloring, so be patient while mixing!
- Bake as directed, and allow to cool before frosting.
- Combine all frosting ingredients EXCEPT food coloring in large mixing bowl and mix until smooth. Set aside about 1/2 of the frosting for the white part, and another half to mix.
- Make 1/2 of the frosting orange.
- When frosting cupcakes, first start with the white, then add orange to the mixing bag. You'll need to repeat this process several times, as the swirl will only be effective for a few cupcakes at a time. If all else fails, frost one swirl white (or the other way around if you want it opposite) and then top with an orange/yellow swirl.
