Target may not be your “Target” this Black Friday…. 🙄
Have you heard?! Target may be sitting out this Black Friday? By sitting out I mean, not offering huge discounts or sales this year!!
While some of you may agree or disagree, I ‘d like to hear what you think about this!
Here’s what was said:
“We’re not interested in driving sales for the sake of sales, [so] you might see us lag competitors in terms of comp-store sales increases,” said John Mulligan, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Target.
See more info here.
I can say, one of the downfalls I see of this is that a lot more people will be at Walmart since they don’t need to go to Target.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks, BSD
I find it disheartening…I get what they are saying, but I think they will be losing customer loyalty.
I think they are actually putting the customer first, before their bottom line. Black Friday is becoming an issue of safety for shoppers and the employees. People abandon all common sense at these things and HURT people. These workers are paid little more than minimum wage most times and do not deserve to deal with mass hordes of crazed people that have abandoned all reason and civility.
Yes, people lose common sense at most stores. BUT–Target was the safest place to be last Black Friday–at least in Niagara Falls. Everything was so civilized. There were policemen at the door (not just rent a guard). They had staff directing traffic at the checkout, with walkie talkies telling you what line to go in. It only took about 10 min. to check out. I considered it to be a model all stores should follow, not the free for all Walmart was.
If that was the case they could still do it online only bottom line target is hurting!
I have to agree with Rachael on this one. Working in retail is hard enough with the low pay and the disgruntled customers you get on a daily basis. I refuse to go back to retail for that reason. Not to mention how upset people get when they realize that something they bought a week before is now half the price. Let’s not forget the dangers of people barging into a store and fighting over products like animals. People get hurt. Black Friday is just a bad idea period.
I agree with Rachel and Kayla. It’s much to dangerous out there and people have no respect for another persons life. All they can think about is getting their hands on that “big” bargain no matter who they have to trample. I’ll be at Target shopping with all the sane people. Thanks Target for putting your customer’s and employees safety first.
THIS SUCKS! I hate this! Get on the Black Friday bandwagon, Target! I will still probably make a stop there just to get my Starbucks fix 😉
I’m okay with it, but only because I work at Target. Maybe it won’t be so busy this year, haha.
Target treats there employees bad they make up excuses b4 u hit ur 90 days and fired like 3 ppl so sad I never worked there but my son did and they never gave him any warnings at all kinda sucks. Since that happened I don’t shop there much at all.
Sorry needed to vent on Target lol
I got hired for seasonal two years ago, told them I’d like to stay on the team, and they hires me permanently. I don’t have a problem with Target.
Hired*
I have to say Walmart and Target are at totally different ends of the scale for me. Target has better quality, cleaner stores and is just a different atmosphere. If they don’t want to do that black friday crazy, I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. That being said, I have only shopped on black friday once, last year. Got one thing at Target and went home..t was just too much of a nightmare.
if they are all going to be at wal mart, I am going to plant myself at target….sit back at starbucks, and enjoy a nice coffee in peace…when extreme sales are advertised, chances of you finding the item is worse than your chances of winning the lottery….smart move Target,,,,
This is not at all true. I was in target this week and I was talking to one of the workers and in the conversation I asked him if the rumors were true. He said no it is not true at all and that target would be doing black friday this year.
I think this is a horrible idea. Since I’m a Target lover and look forward to black Friday every year. I think they hope to make more money with the specialty stores and fancy brands. They don’t offer layaway either and will lose a lot of business but I guess that these losses are will only be like pennies to them!
Meh. I’ve never been to a black Friday sale so it doesn’t matter either way to me.
We it seems to me that they probably don’t make a decent profit to continue with this promotion. The question is does bringing people into the store draw them to either purchase items other than what they came in for and/ or draw then to return.
I don’t know but I would say no to both., Only Target can answer those questions.
I’m actually very happy that there is a retailer standing up and saying “this is getting ridiculous” and making a change. Wal-mart really irritated me last year opening on Thanksgiving, soon if there isn’t a change, they will take over the holiday of Thanksgiving as well and rather than being thankful and being around family, people will forgo that to score a good deal on a TV? People are DYING at these things, dying for something that is 100% material. I appreciate a good deal as much as the next person, but having a sale so big that policemen must be present for our safety and the safety of the workers, there is a huge problem. I had hoped one retailer would step up to the plate this year, makes me like Target even more!
Well said!!
I agree black friday is getting crazy I to am glad there standing up to this crazyness
I agree. Walmart being open on Thanksgiving is just ridiculous. I feel bad for the people who have to work on holidays. (Then again I live in a place where most businesses are open 24/7 so almost everyone works on the holidays anyway.) A sale is not worth getting hurt or in extreme cases dying for. I only shopped Black Friday once and had an anxiety attack from all the people. I refuse to put myself in that situation again.
You don’t have the whole story here. Target WILL be having Black Friday sale, and they even announced expanded price-matching policies. They, however, will not be offering ridiculous prices, like $20 for a 50″ LED television, limited to 10 per store. Those crazy sales will not happen. But decently discounted merchandise across the whole store will happen.
I personally only go two places on Black Friday (well I work in retail so I guess I go there too, sad face). Bath and Body Works and Target. I’m really bummed about this, hopefully they decide to do it
Target is normally my FIRST stop on Black Friday! I camp out a couple hours ahead of time. I do not go for the big ticket items such as TVs or Video Game systems but clothes and some toys. This makes me sad to think that I will have to battle the Walmart madness to get my awesome Black Friday deals!
Even if Target does opt out this year, I think it will only take a year or two before they are back in the game. Look at Walmart, they did away with layaway and it didn’t take long before they brought it back. Once Walmart saw they money lost from not having layaway they brought it back, I think the same thing will happen with Target and Black Friday.
I’m ok with that. My husband I got into Black Friday about 4 years ago. We’d pick one store that had the best deals, get up super early and go stand in lines that would wrap around the store. Shopping only gets that crazy once a year and we used to have fun doing it. We got really turned off by the whole thing last year, though, when Black Friday started Thursday night instead. It just isn’t the same anymore and I think it is getting a bit out of control. I don’t blame Target for not wanting to partake in this year’s shenanigans.
Guess people can like it or leave it, but I think it will hurt their bottom line considering the economy. We all love a good deal and are more likely to go somewhere else if its cheaper
I’m okay with that but I’m sure gonna miss the crazy Target Black Friday lady in all of the commercials!
I think this is a terrible mistake. I LOVE Black Friday shopping, and I usually only go to Target, I don’t mind waiting outside in the cold and I think this is not a good idea for them to sit this year out. They will loose so much business, and I agree Black Friday is fun!
I have family who work in retail and who HATE Black Friday, because they don’t get to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with us. While I love the good sales, I’m happy to see retailers moving back in the other direction (as opposed to the ones who are moving towards being open on Thanksgiving Day!).
I do better shopping at Target for their after holiday sales anyways – have always scored so many deals the day after Christmas and not to mention their January toy clearance!!
They are still going to be open on Black Friday and have a few good shopping deals. They just aren’t participating in the shenanigans
i don’t do black friday anymore. People lack all sense of reason and civility. I will be on a plane to Vegas while everyone else is trying to kill each other for a Furby
Target is a joke. I did their black Friday sale online last year. Didn’t get half my stuff and it took me 8 months to get a refund on the stuff they never delivered. They claimed my order was lost and refused to resent it. They then cancelled my order and told me to reorder….at the original price and not the sale price. I quit shopping there and didn’t plan to buy from them anyways. They did this same thing to a lot of people. Greedy.
I heard they are still having one and will price match other stores. I really could careless I don’t like to fight the crowds for a few bucks off.
This would actually be a good thing. Target is price matching competitor’s so while everyone is standing in line at 3:00am at Walmart, I can walk right into Target and get the same items at same price with no craziness. Love it!
Isnt Target price matching all competitors?
I despise everything about Black Friday. The one time I went was complete chaos. My friend and I were pushed and shoved, knocked down..I couldn’t believe people would act like such lunatics over a supposed bargain.
Do your community a favor and skip the big stores and spend your money at local shops.
I also worked for target and thought they did not value me as a worker. I didn’t even know the managers in another dept. but that did not stop them from calling me in and reprimanding me. On Black Friday or any other supposed “sale” there really isn’t that much of a discount, (wait an hour at 3 amto pay $1 less, no thanks target.)
Good for Target. I’ll be there shopping, instead of being trampled like people will be at Wal Mart.
OMG!! Black Friday is a family tradition for us!!! It kicks off our holiday season! Shame on Target!!!!
This is a BAD move on Target’s part. It’s all about running a business, making money, having a step above the competitors and having the edge to market themselves. Are they giving up on the customers wants and needs? They don’t want to attract customers and make money? Sounds like they need to replace the marketing team. This is NOT an effective way to run a business!
Get a grip. Target is price matching everyone else this year so there’s no need to do BF. Besides, everyone complained BF wasn’t fair to employees last year, so they’ve addressed that issue nicely. No one is ever happy.
I was actually in Target last week and they were having a team meeting in the back of the store. I heard them discussing scheduling for Black Friday. They were talking about offering longer hours- possibly being open on Thanksgiving and sales….I dont think they are going to bow out from what I heard. At least not in my area
I used to go every year with my daughter and sometimes her best friend and we loved it. I have not gone out for the past three years or so…. people have gotten crazy and obnoxiouos. I watch people snatching stuff out of others carts, push, shove, fight to get into the store first. It is crazy. I see nothing wrong with Target not participating… its time they end the chaos! And making people work on Thanksgiving day to make an extra buck is horrible also.
Besides…. they have fantastic sales all through December that are better than the Black Friday sales! And dont forget Cyber Monday… much safer!
Oh they are having their sales, just not crazy ones just to lure in rushing customers. I don’t do black fridays anyway unless there is that one big item I really want. I can wait the day after and thru the rest of season to xmas shop.
I’ve gotten some amazing deals on Traget Black Friday over the past few years! I think it’s a smart move, as long as they have comparable specials on weekends before and after Txgiving… which I’m confident they will do in order to reach sales goals
but they are planning on price matching!
(let me clarify – they will price match online websites like amazon.com and bestbuy.com – at least that’s what I heard!)
Black friday is a tradition in our house.my mom and i started bf shopping when i was 14 and its been going strong now for 23 years or more now how can target be your bummer to the begining of christmas shopping just go elsewhere. Its not if target had the best sales out there last year anyways. Brand items, big ticket item deals seemed to have come from walmart and kmart and clothing i think came from jcp or sears the only reason i ever liked going to target was to watch all the late birds try to come in at 10am in the morning and try to score big ticket items, as i sit and enjoy starbucks and a peppermint cakepop when all my bf shopping has been done! Good luck target the tradition will live on without you!
As someone who works at Target, and asked during my shift tonight, as far as we know unless it’s suddenly changed, Target will in fact be open on Black Friday. In fact it seems that Target will open at 10pm on Thanksgiving evening. So enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner with your families all… us employees won’t be.
That’s really upsetting!! Every year I always go to target on black Friday, they always have amazing deals. Some years target is the only store I need to go to
Wow, yet they price match online. THis is a huge disappointment. By not having Black Friday sales they are missing out on opportunities to draw in the consumer to spend money. THis could hurt their sale forecast.
