Wow! This is pretty freaky for those of you that have Smartphones. If you have one and take pictures from your phone then post them online, you may want to keep reading…
Geotagging is a feature available on smartphones that is used for GPS, accessing maps and your location, searching for gas stations, food, etc. Well, every time you take a picture with your cell phone, it will also record your exact location and where the picture was taken! Then, when you post these pictures online (Facebook, Twitter, Photobucket, etc) that location is still attached to them!!! Talk about scary….watch this news video about it….
You can go to this website to learn how to change your phones settings (only for select models). We need to keep our kids and loved ones safe so please spread the word!
Thanks, Karrie!
This is why we don’t use blackberrys or iphones, we only use an android that my husband customized. My husband was an network security architect for company that specialized in mobile support management for businesses that used blackberrys or iphones and after working there and knowing how easy it is to hack into there operating systems he will not buy anything but an Android.
Wow…I knew that about the smart phones, but I didn’t know that Android phones don’t do this. Good to know…thanks Annie and of course, thank you Karrie for posting this.
The title is not set up as a link. I wanted to post it on my blog, but am having trouble with the title/link.
wow that is pretty scary!!! I just looked at mine and it was already set to Off maybe they come Turned Off and people don’t know the Full detail about Geo metro tagging so they turn them on and forget about them?? IDK
How about you don’t have people on your friends list that are strangers. As far as I’m concerned there is no one on my list that I don’t actually know in real life. Check your privacy settings on facebook as well then you should be perfectly secure.
You are exactly right Megan! My husband travels a lot for work, and will add anyone he meets on facebook. I finally had to say something, and tell him to stop it. We have a 2 year old son and I don’t want anyone that doesn’t know us seeing his pictures. My iphone camera settings were already off, because it asked when I setup the phone the first time. It’s just crazy what a phone can do now, so of course it can tell your location. Thanks for the article.
Sorry for not clarifying things before but Our Android phones are modified and run on FreeBSD which is a version of Unix that AT&T developed.
